Mega hit musical 'Mamma Mia!' to return to S.Korea in 4 years

SEOUL March 15 (Yonhap) -- Legendary musical “Mamma Mia!” filled with Euro-pop group ABBA’s tracks will be returning to South Korean audiences.

Musical production company Seen See Company addressed on Wednesday that the musical “Mamma Mia!” starting on March 24,

The upcoming season will be a reimbursed version of the musical which was canceled due to wide spread of COVID 19, 3 years ago. Seen See company planned on putting back “Mamma Mia!” on to the stage on March 2020, however due to COVID 19 the plan went sideways.

The musical which has returned to South Korea after 4 years since it last took stage in South Korea. Things to look out for throughout the upcoming concert is the well combined cast members from the past and present.

Main characters of the musical will be performed by long running actresses known for their previous roles and various other supporting characters are acted by newly joined actors and actresses.

The newly selected actors Jang Hyun-seong, Min Young-ki, Kim Jin-soo, Song Il-guk, Kim Hwan-hee and Choi Tae-yi. On top of that, veteran musical actor Choi Jung-won, who took the stage over 1,000 times as the main character Donna, as well as 35 actors, including Shin Young-sook, Hong Ji-min, Kim Young-joo, Kim Jung-min, and Lee Hyun-woo, who have become the central members of “Mamma Mia!” will be working together for the upcoming show.

Music director Kim Moon-jeong addressed, "I think the upcoming season will be more solid due to the newly added members of the production team," adding, "I'm looking forward to see the drama full of amazing actors and actresses who will fill the scene with ABBA’s tracks.”

The musical “Mamma Mia!”, which premiered in London in 1999, is a steady-selling musical that celebrates its 24th anniversary in 2023.

With the delightful story of mother and daughter set in a beautiful Mediterranean Greek resort setting, the work features a larger number of middle-aged audiences than other musicals, with familiar hits from the legendary four-member group "Abba." You can see a number of masterpieces left by ABBA throughout the show, including the track "Mamma Mia," which became the title track of the musical, followed by "Dancing Queen," "I Have a Dream," and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!" and more.

The musical “Mamma Mia!” has been performed in 16 languages through 50 productions which was showcased in 450 cities around the world, and attracted over $4 billion dollars in ticket sales worldwide.

Since the musical kicked off in 2004, within South Korea, it has been showcased over 17 thousand times so far, and in 2019, it has set the record of exceeding over 2 million viewers in the shortest period among licensed musicals.

Producer Park Myung-sung of Seen See Company addressed, "I remember the day when I told the actors to cancel the production of ‘Mamma Mia!’ three years ago and the lunch I received from the actors to cheer the production team up." adding, "It's overwhelming that we have endure the hard days and rejoiced with the work once again."

The musical “Mamma Mia!” will continue on with the production until June 25.
