SEOUL, June 14 (Yonhap) – “I have nothing to do but help. She’s my daughter. I would beat him if she were a son, but a baby has to come out of my daughter’s body…”

South Korean actor Choi Young-joon, who played the father Bang Ho-sik who happened to accept the pregnancy of his daughter, a high school student, in tvN’s weekend drama “Our Blues,” which recently ended, talked about the character’s feelings during an interview with Yonhap News Agency on May 30.

Bang Ho-sik, played by Choi Young-joon, is a character that lived a bitter life by blowing his money on stock, business, and gambling. He takes care of his daughter Young-joo(Roh Yoon-seo) alone as a single dad on behalf of his wife, who ran away.

Choi felt sorry for Bang Ho-sik, saying, “It must have been harder for a father to raise a daughter than a son by himself.”

The actor mentioned that the scene where Bang Ho-sik hesitantly tells Young-joo to eat well after buying beef for her menstrual irregularity best represents the character. He said it was the only thing he could do but he must have been very naive and awkward.

Choi stated that the difference between the reactions of Bang Ho-sik and Jung In-kwon(Park Ji-hwan) in terms of finding about Young-joo’s pregnancy is due to this issue. Jung is the father of Jung Hyun(Bae Hyun-sung), Young-joo’s boyfriend and father-to-be.

While Jung In-kwon punches and kicks his son, the only thing Bang Ho-sik can do is to turn the table upside down and kick the innocent fan with his foot.

This "fan scene," which sheds tears from viewers, is considered a great scene that conveys the feelings of his father whose world comes crashing down.

Choi Young-joon said, "It's true that I should be angry, but I don't know where to lose my temper, and although I was aware that she was pregnant, I couldn't accept the truth in my mind,” adding, "Then, I fell down when I saw Young-joo's belly."

In fact, Choi Young-joon is single and has no children. He said that when he expressed this boiling paternal love, he was faithful to his emotions without being calculating.

“There isn’t any special way for a father to get angry. So I kept being honest with my emotions. I thought emotions had to be real to look like a real dad. It's just sad to see anyone crying. I wanted to show the process of not being aware of the fact itself and trying to deny it when a person hears a shocking news."

Choi said that Young-joo was both a life and great responsibility to Ho-sik. In the beginning of the drama, there is a scene where Ho-sik looks at the sea and says, "I’m free if Young-joo goes to college."

He also mentioned, "The author asked me why I wanted my daughter to do well, and the answer showed that it was not for my daughter, but for Ho-sik," adding, "Ho-sik is responsible for his daughter, and he becomes comfortable only if she grows up well. That's why parents want their children to grow up to be at an age where they can take care of themselves,:

The actor stated, “Ho-sik has a pride that he lived a decent life while taking care of his own daughter. He also feels confident although he is not smart and undergoes hardships,” adding, “I wanted to portray the character as someone who has willingly lived his way of life.”

Choi Young-joon made a debut as a member of the ballad group 7Dayz in 2002. Afterwards, he was cast in a musical and started his career as an actor while playing diverse characters so far.

The actor made himself known with his gentle look in popular dramas “Hospital Playlist1·2” and “Vincenzo,” and currently stars in “Why Her” as a CEO of the private equity firm.

Choi, who did not have much desire as an actor, said, “Now, I want to have a sense of responsibility,” adding, “There are times when I have to express delicate feelings as I take a bigger role and I want to act with more efforts.”

The actor delivered his experience of playing the role in a wheelchair in the past, saying, “After performing for a month, a person in a wheelchair actually visited to watch the performance. My mind went black and I studied how to act from the beginning,” adding, “I don’t want other people, who do the certain work or feel the emotions, to be offended by my acting.”
