SEOUL, July 16 (Yonhap) -- In director Choi Dong-hoon's new movie “Alienoid,” swordsman Mureuk (Ryu Jun-yeol) bluffs but not hateful, and he acts recklessly with baseless confidence, but is somehow reliable. It reminds of Jeon Woo-chi played by actor Kang Dong-won in the director's previous work.
Ryu Jun-yeol, who met at a cafe in Seoul on Friday said, "Even if you just look at the first scene, the two characters are very different." He explained the difference by saying, "I am just an ascetic who drinks takju while Jeon Woo-chi lands on a palace riding clouds and mocks King."
Part 1 of “Alienoid,” which is about to be released on July 20, depicts the story that unfolds as the gate of time open between the late Goryeo and 2022. Ryu Jun-yeol played Mureuk, a Goryeo-era swordsman who looks for a sword to win a high reward.
He said, “When I first read the script, I questioned whether it would be possible to make this extensive worldview into a movie.”
“I think the director wanted to talk about the relationship and humans. As you can see in the title, he emphasized human by writing it separately in the title. Personally, I really liked that people who were connected through relationships came together to save the planet.”
“Alienoid” is a sci-fi that crosses a wide range of time and space from the end of Goryeo to the present, and from Earth to space. A huge spaceship appears and a car flies out of an unknown door in the middle of the sky, and splendid attractions are added, reminding of a Hollywood blockbuster.
Ryu Jun-yeol said, "It is a film that no one else tried in Korea. I am happy as an actor and as an audience."
“If aliens existed, they would certainly have come down with spaceships in the past as well. What did people think back then? How did they react? I think that was the beginning. There will be more to talk about in the future. I am begging the director to film part 3. (Laughs)"
Ryu Jun-yeol, who said he was a big fan of director Choi Dong-hoon before becoming an actor, recalled that when he was first offered to work together, it was “breathtaking and touching.”
“One of my goals as an actor was working with director Choi Dong-hoon.’ I like all of his works, but I liked ‘The Big Swindle’ (2004) so much that I memorized every cut and line by line. It was really exciting to be able to work with such a person for not just one movie but two.”
Part 1 and Part 2 of 'Alienoid' were filmed at the same time for about 13 months. Part 2 will be released next year.
“Personally, I found both films very interesting,” said Ryu Jun-yeol, who realized why director Choi’s works are so loved by people through this work.
“I still remember the director’s dazzling gaze, as he said, ‘This is what a movie is.’ Because he has his own thoughts about movie, he can make such works and give that energy to the actors. Audiences cannot love director Choi Dong-hoon because this is buried in the movie. I hope audiences take a closer look at the director's worldview and his side as a storyteller through this work.”
