SEOUL, April 1 (Yonhap) -- JTBC’s Wednesday-Thursday drama “Thirty-Nine,” starring Son Ye-jin·Jeon Mi-do·Kim Ji-hyun, ended with its own highest ratings.
The final episode of "Thirty-Nine," which aired at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, recorded 8.1 percent in viewership, according to the rating company Nielsen Korea, Friday.
The last episode depicted Jeong Chan-young's (Jeon Mi-do) passing, surrounded by her loved ones, and the life of the left ones.
The drama, which depicts the friendship and love of three 39-year-olds, drew attention right after Son Ye-jin announced the news of her marriage to her lover Hyun Bin. Coincidentally, the last episode was also aired on their wedding day.
“Thirty-Nine,” which portrays the story of three close friends facing the death of one of them, is said to remind the drama "Now, We Are Breaking Up,” starring Song Hye-kyo, in that it implies the terminally ill character. However, the series is different since it focuses on the “womance(a neologism that combines the word woman and romance)” of three women.
However, the show was criticized for glorifying adultery by drawing the love between Chan-young and a married man Jin-seok (Lee Mu-saeng), and some said that it was unpleasant to see friends trying to connect Joo-hee with Hyun-joon (Lee Tae-hwan), who had a lover.
Moreover, the story of Sunwoo (Yeon Woo-jin)'s younger sister, So-won (An So-hee), who starts working at a bar from a father wound, was criticized for its outdating setting.
Despite this controversy, “Thirty-Nine” surpassed 7.7% in ratings in just three episodes and ranked No. 8 worldwide in the Netflix TV program category according to a global online video content ranking site FlixPatrol.
The actors also played a big role in the popularity of the series.
Son appeared as a reliable friend, sometimes showing off herself as a lovely lover and her various charms.
Jeon Mi-do also showed a different look by playing an acting instructor with a personality contrary to Chae Song-hwa in the "Hospital Playlist" series.
Meanwhile, tvN's Wednesday-Thursday drama "Kill Heel," which aired on the same day, recorded 2.6% in viewership and IHQ·MBN drama "Sponsor" recorded 0.9% viewership.
