SEOUL, Mar. 7 (Yonhap) -- The Busan International Film Festival announced South Korean actor Ji Chang-wook as the winner of the 16th Asian Film Awards’ Next Generation Award.

The Award is a special non-competitive award honoring a budding star who has been active all across Asia. Ji made his screen debut in 2008 and since then made himself known by appearing in a slew of hit films and television series including “Warrior Baek Dong-soo” and “Empress Ki.”

His lead role as Dong-hae in the daily drama series “Smile Again” plucked the 35-year-old actor to stardom. Since then, Ji has shown off his potential of growing into a global Hallyu star by skillfully playing notable lead roles in every work, including “Healer,” “Suspicious Partner,” “Lovestruck in the City,” “Backstreet Rookie,” and Netflix’s “The Sound of Magic.”

He also featured spectacular actions in the hit action thriller “Fabricated City” while expanding his career by appearing on the stages of musicals “Jack the Ripper,” “The Days” and “Shinheung Military School.”

The 16th Asian Film Awards is scheduled to be held at the Hong Kong Palace Museum’s Hong Kong Jockey Club Auditorium on Mar. 12.

The Awards Ceremony will be live broadcasted on its official YouTube channel and also on the web portal Naver from 8:45 p.m. on the same day.

The Asian Film Awards are presented annually by the Asian Film Academy (AFAA) to recognize the outstanding career of film professionals in the film industries of Asian cinema. The Awards are awarded by Hong Kong, Busan, and Tokyo International Film Festivals to foster the development of Asian films.
