SEOUL, September 26 (Yonhap) -- Earrings have been used since the early times compared to other accessories that decorate a person's body. Both men and women wore earrings, and some also cherished earrings as if they were talismans.

Many different earrings were found at the ancient tombs of the three kingdoms in Korea, and although the size was smaller than other relics, it was praised that they were beautifully made with delicate craftsmanship and making skill.

There will be a place provided to feel the beauty of Korea's earrings made from the Neolithic Period to the Joseon dynasty. It is going to be the first exhibition where the earrings of King and Queen Muryeong and all the other earrings made in Baekje are gathered in one place.

The Gongju National Museum of Korea announced on the 26th that it will open a special exhibition "Close Looking: All Things Earrings of  Baekje Kingdom," which spotlights the beauty and socio-cultural meaning of Baekje earrings, on September 27.

In this exhibition, a total of 1,021 pieces (354 items) of relics, including 8 national treasures and 26 treasures, mainly earrings from Baekje, will be displayed.

The exhibition is categorized into three parts.

The structure, characteristics, and production process of how the people of Baekje, who had excellent goldsmith skills, made and wore earrings will be introduced in the first part of the exhibition, "Made in Baekje."

The results of microscopic investigations and component analysis of Baekje earrings, such as round thin ring earrings or earrings with colorful draperies attached to rings, are explained with images, graphics, and three-dimensional (3D) modeling data. The process of reproducing King Muryeong's earrings was also recorded on video.

Stories regarding the people who used earrings will be introduced in the second part of the exhibition, "The King and the noble belongings."

Visitors will be able to observe various artifacts such as earrings from the ruins of Gongju Suchon-ri and Cheonan Yongwon-ri, the tombs of the Hanseong Provincial Powers, earrings from the remains of a burnt house in Wonwon-ri, Hwacheon, Gangwon, and earrings found along with human bones in Eungpyeong-ri, Buyeo.

It is also interesting that visitors will be able to compare the relics of the queen of Baekhe and Shilla.

In the exhibition, the royal tomb of King Muryeong, which can estimate the identity and gender of the person buried in the tomb, and the accessories of the queen excavated from the north mound of Hwangnamdaechong tomb will be displayed together to allow visitors to see the appearance and beauty of the queens of two countries.

The highlights of the last third part of the exhibition, "The Connection with East Asia," are the six pairs of earrings made during the Three Kingdoms period.

A special spot will be provided where visitors can see the gold earrings of King and Queen Muryeong, designated as national treasures, gold earrings found in Gyeong-ju, Silla, in the married couple's tomb, earrings excavated from Tomb No. 28 and Hapcheon Okjeon M4 in Gaya, which are designated as treasures.

An official from the museum said, "It is the first time where the three kingdom period earrings are designated as national treasures and treasures gathered in one spot." "Visitors will be able to compare the different tastes of the ruling class of Baekje, Goguryeo, Silla, and Gaya."

This special exhibition will be available at the Special Exhibition Room until February 26, next year.
