SEOUL, Jan. 22 (Yonhap) – The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage published a comprehensive report “Traditional Lime Mortar and Plaster: Restoration of Historic Building,” which contains achievements of investigations, according to the institute on Jan. 22.

Lime mortar has been used for the foundation, filling and finish for traditional architecture, and it was recorded in Uigwe and annals, the documents from Joseon Dynasty. However, most of the manufacturing techniques of traditional lime mortar were disconnected during the Japanese colonial rule, so it has been raised that restoring manufacturing techniques of traditional lime mortar should be required.

In this research, Uigwe in 104 volumes of Oegyujanggak was investigated thoroughly for historic research, and research on material characteristics of 477 samples from historic sites, such as Yeojang(女牆·a low fence) of Namhansanseong Fortress and Hyangwonjeong Pavilion in Gyeongbokgung Palace, was carried out.

Based on the research findings, the optimum mixing condition was suggested and the evaluation result of durability was acquired. Moreover, the empirical research was conducted through the trial application to Changdeokgung Palace and Namhansanseong Fortress.

The official from the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage said, “The techniques using Jukmi(粥米·rice used to cook rice porridge) and Beopyu(法油·perilla oil), which have been additives of traditional lime mortar used in Joseon Dynasty but disconnected at the present time, were reproduced through experiments,” adding, they “confirmed that Beopyu has the waterproof function inhibiting breakage of lime mortar.”

The results from this research project will be applied to the improvement of the “Standard Specification for Cultural Heritage” regarding 11 construction work fields, such as the bricklayers work and plastering work. Specifications are the documents that state the details of the construction.

The report can be seen on the homepage of CHA(cha.go.kr) and the homepage of research publications under NRICH.
