The farewell was predestined, Yi-hoo who continuously mentioned her predestined lifespan, however Jae-hyun decides to stay by her side and prepare for her death together.
After Ye-hoon passed, Jae-hyun decides to clean out her remaining throughout the house. However, soon after Jae-hyun receives an email from his wife Yi-hoo which disclosed an information that she is alive at a place called Yonder so he should come visit.
The original Tving series Yonder is director Lee Joon Ik’s known for his movie works, “The Kings Clown,” in 2005 “The Thro” in 2015, “The Book of Fish” in 2021 and more of the movie’s first shot at a drama series. Therefore a lot of fans and viewers were excited to see how “Yonder turned out to be.”
Director Lee gave up on significant factors of SF genre of movie and decided to focus on the atmosphere and protagonist Jae-hyun’s emotional details.
Protagonist Jae-hyun is not very emotional to begin with. The emptiness and void he felt when Jae-hyun’s wife passed and the chaos he suffered through, moreover, his denial to believe heaven like place yonder were described in very fine details. Director lee uses Jae-hyun’s way of breathing, and rolling of his eyes to depict his current state of emotion protagonist desperately keeps it suppressed.
“Yonder” if given a genre is a SF and mellow however, throughout the series aspects of thriller can be witnessed.
Doctor K acted by Jung Jin-young who constantly states “End goal of every science is Heaven,” lure people by stating that science can provide a channel of communication between the dead and the living, and eve when we die we will be able to feel alive.
Those who have hard time taking in the fact that their loved ones passed away are desperate to visit Yonder an imaginary heaven, and some of them who could not take in the pain of being left along commits suicide in order to meet their family or friends.
Since everyone eventually dies and have to cope with farewells of loved ones, the ultimate question being thrown at the viewer “What would you do if you had a chance.” is not complex and very heavy matter.
Although some critics state that some of the lines are very complex and the story line takes forever to proceed, “Yonder” puts emphasis on why the memories are beautiful and important and brings heartwarming story to those who miss their loved ones.
