SEOUL, Sep. 13 (Yonhap) -- “It was a novel and very scrumptious taste. It will be in my memories for a long time and I will want to try it again.”
Eugene (real name Kim Eugene, 40) who have lived as Oh Yun-hee, a woman racing to enter the upper class, for 11 months from October 2020 has shared her relief and somewhat sad feelings for having finished SBS TV series “The Penthouse.”
“Oh Yun-hee will be left as a loving and hateful character for me as well. She lived a hard life, I put in a lot of time to understand her. Although it was hard to get to the bottom of her, but it was good to see her and she will be in my memories for a long time,” said the actress during a recent online interview.
Like the actress said, Oh Yun-hee has changed the most during the three seasons and had ups and downs. The mother, striving for her daughter Bae Ro-na (Kim Hyun-soo), died in the end. Of course, many watchers believed in her survival until the end as there were many characters who died but came back alive.
“It is fun because it means the character is being loved. If Ha Yoon-cheol (Yoon Jong-hoon) said “I loved you, (Cheon) Seo-jin (Kim So-yeon),” instead of “I loved you, Yun-hee,” I would have walked out of my grave,” said Eugene.
“Although both met sad endings, death, but I hope for their happiness in the after-world.”
“There were sad points in being dead. I couldn’t live to see Cheon Seo-jin and Joo Dan-tae (Um Ki-joon) getting punished. But that’s life, isn’t it? Although I died earlier than expected, I think it was not in vain. It was fun watching the series in a viewer’s point of view. Also, I kept appearing in recalling scenes. I would like to say that it was good that I died,” said Eugene.
“There were many not understandable parts as Eugene in Yun-hee. Especially I couldn’t get the part where she killed Min Seol-ah (Jo Soo-min). But as the series started with the rivalry between her and Cheon Seo-jin in their childhoods, I played the role imagining her life. Later I was “Oh Yun-hee”-fied and started to be convinced thinking “Oh Yun-hee would do this.” Also, as a mother of a daughter myself, it was understandable. Although Yun-hee was never a model of maternal love, I could understand her love and care for her daughter.”
The drama's third season took a downward curve but season 2 garnered explosive popularity marking almost 30% viewing rate.
“We received so much love. The moment I could feel the popularity was when little children recognized me as Oh Yun-hee. It was a new experience being recognized even by elementary students. I am really grateful for having received so much love with this series which was a work after such a long break,” smiled Eugene.
“Feeling achievement through this intense work, I have felt the fun of acting once more,” added the actress.
Eugene, former member of the ‘first generation idol girl-group’ S.E.S, is known as one of the successful cases of idol singers who changed their career into an actor.
“I receive a lot of strength from my husband (actor Ki Tae-young). He is a trustworthy adviser who gives me cheers and monitors with me. Above all, acting is really fun. Thanks to the experience of acting Oh Yun-hee I feel like I will be able to go for any characters when I get the chance without hesitation,” said Eugene.
