SEOUL, June 7 (Yonhap) -- “It was so nice. It’s an honor for actors and filmmakers to step on the red carpet in the competing section of Cannes Film Festival.”

Gang Dong-won, the leading actor in the film “Broker,” shared his feelings about entering the Cannes at a cafe in Jongno District, Seoul, on Tuesday.

“Broker," the first Korean film by Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda was invited to the 75th Cannes competition and the film's star Song Kang-ho took home the best actor prize for his role as a baby broker.

Gang said he expected Song to win an acting prize early on and as soon as his name was called, he thought, “I knew it.” The actor said he stood up first even before Song.

"Broker," depicts the relationships of characters formed through a baby box, where people anonymously drop off newborns that they can't raise. Gang plays Dong-soo, a broker who sells infants left by their parents, and shows on-screen chemistry with Song.

Dong-soo is a character who was abandoned by his mother as a child and grew up in an institution.

Gang said, “Since Dong-soo is from a facility, I tried to keep up with those emotions even if it wasn’t revealed in the film.” The actor mentioned that he spoke with people who were raised in facilities for his role and said, “I wanted to tell the stories of those who I met.”

“Dong-soo is the most relaxed character I ever acted. Since it was mainly everyday life acting, it was fun and I sometimes wondered whether I was acting or not (laughs).”

“Broker” is also the first film that Gang participated in the production.

When asked how he felt about experiencing the production seven years ago from the stage of scenario development, he said, "It took long, but it was amusing," adding, "Since director Kore-eda is such a master, I trusted him and worked hard on my job."

Gang said that he became close to Kore-eda through this work and that he met with the director the day before and celebrated his birthday.

"It's sad that he is spending his birthday alone in Korea for two years. He didn’t have people to spend it with so I ate with him for two years in a row, and he even turned 60 yesterday. He spent his 60th birthday dinner with me (laughs).”

Gang, who is participating in the production of various works through co-production and scenario writing, recently announced the news of the contract with the large U.S. agency, the Creative Artists Agency (CAA).
