SEOUL, June 18 (Yonhap News) — "Since it's my first time doing a variety show, I think I can show my true tension from everyday life," said Karina of K-pop girl group aespa, during a media conference for Netflix' reality show "Agents of Mystery" held in Seoul.
Karina, one of the lead participants of the new show directed by Jeong Jong-yeon, said, "At first, I said I wasn't easily scared, but once filming started, I got so scared that I couldn't even speak." The director is known for his expertise in "brainy" variety shows.
Set to be released in a six-part series, 'Agents of Mystery' follows a special task force solving peculiar cases that typical departments cannot handle.
Karina expressed her enthusiasm, noting, "Even though it was just filming and we knew we could leave the set afterwards, we were all so immersed and scared that we were running around in fear. I think viewers will enjoy watching us get so caught up in the moment."
Karina, a fan of mystery novels and anime, added, "I'm thrilled to start my first variety show with a mystery concept. Usually seen as a charismatic leader, this time I'll show a more youthful side among my older castmates. You will see my new reactions and genuine expressions."
Director Jeong Jong-yeon has been acclaimed for his meticulous design of unique worlds and intricate missions in shows like 'The Great Escape,' 'Girls' High School Mystery Class,' and 'Devil's Plan.'
About 'Agents of Mystery,' Jeong explained, "This program focuses more on adventure than deduction. We've noticed that horror elements get a strong response, so we aimed at that genre this time."
He continued, "The cast has bright personalities, but the atmosphere of this program isn't as cheerful. I'm excited to see how I can take away their usual laughter."
Jeong highlighted the attention to detail in creating an immersive environment for the cast, "We paid attention to the texture, weight, smell of props, and even the taste of water to create a naturally tense situation for the cast."
Joining Karina in 'Agents of Mystery' are comedian Lee Yong-jin, Lee Eun-ji, singer John Park, actress Lee Hyeri, and actor Kim Do-hoon. The cast faces various missions, such as finding three missing people with the same birth date in an eerie abandoned factory and uncovering the truth behind a shocking incident involving six submarine crew members.
Lee Hyeri commented, "I didn't expect to get so immersed, but it felt like we were really in that situation, unlike an escape room game." Lee Eun-ji added, "The set and props naturally made us over-immerse, and the intriguing storyline kept us engaged."
'Agents of Mystery' premieres today with all six episodes available for viewing.
