SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- A forum aimed at exploring South Korea's survival strategies amid growing instability in the global alliance order, security uncertainties and supply chain disruptions will be held later this month.

 

Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's key newswire, said Friday it will host the "2026 Korea Peninsula Symposium" on June 26 at the Crystal Ballroom of Lotte Hotel Seoul in central Seoul under the theme "Global Compound Crises and the Korean Peninsula."

 

The event will be co-hosted by the Ministry of Unification, the Institute for National Security Strategy and Yonhap's Northeast Asia Center.

 

Unification Minister Chung Dong-young will deliver a keynote speech introducing the government's policy direction and strategies for building peace on the Korean Peninsula amid mounting global challenges.

 

In congratulatory messages, U.S. Rep. Young Kim, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on East Asia and the Pacific, and U.S. Rep. Ami Bera, co-chair of the Congressional Korea Caucus, will stress the importance of the South Korea-U.S. alliance through video remarks.

 

Ahead of the sessions, Presidential Senior Secretary for Public Relations and Communications Lee Kyu-youn will read a congratulatory message from President Lee Jae Myung at the opening ceremony. National Assembly Speaker Cho Jung-sik will attend the ceremony and deliver remarks.

 

Yonhap President and CEO Hwang Dae-il and Institute for National Security Strategy President Kim Sung-bae will open the symposium with welcoming addresses.

 

The symposium will consist of two sessions featuring discussions by domestic and international scholars and experts.

 

The first session, titled "Fractures in the Alliance Order and Strategic Responses by Major Countries," will be moderated by Kim Sung-bae and examine changes in the global alliance system and the strategies adopted by key nations.

 

Participants in the roundtable discussion include Patrick Cronin, Asia-Pacific security chair at the Hudson Institute in the United States; Wei Tiejun, head of the Institute of International Strategy at Peking University in China; and Junya Nishino, professor of political science at Keio University in Japan, along with experts representing Europe.

 

The second session, themed "Escalating Economic, Energy and Security Crises -- Survival Strategies for the Korean Peninsula," will focus on concrete strategies for South Korea amid overlapping diplomatic, security, economic and energy challenges.

 

The session will be moderated by Kim Byung-yeon, distinguished professor of economics at Seoul National University, with participants including Lee Hye-jung, professor of political science and international relations at Chung-Ang University, and Choi Jong-kun, former first vice foreign minister, as well as other academics and former senior government officials.

 

The symposium will be livestreamed in Korean and English through Yonhap's official YouTube channel.

 

Now in its 12th year, the Korea Peninsula Symposium has brought together policymakers and experts from home and abroad to assess developments surrounding the Korean Peninsula and seek practical solutions. Yonhap has organized the event annually in cooperation with the Ministry of Unification and other institutions.

 

This year's symposium is sponsored by major government ministries, including the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defense, as well as the National Unification Advisory Council and Yonhap News TV.
