SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Yonhap) -- Records of weather conditions such as temperature, precipitation, and wind every day for 60 years will become a national cultural property.

The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on Thursday that "Mokpo Meteorological Observation Records" will be registered as a national cultural property on Friday.

The records are observed data for over 60 years until 1963 after the official meteorological observations began at the second Mokpo Provisional Observatory in Okdo-ri at South Jeolla province on March 25, 1904.

The second Mokpo Temporary Observatory, which opened in Okdo, Sinan-gun in 1904, was later moved to Mokpo Daeui-dong and Mokpo Yeonsan-dong, and the name changed to Mokpo Observatory. From 1992, it is written as Mokpo meteorological observatory.

Soon-to-be registered record has 524 pocket register, which recorded observed value of each climate categories such as temperature, precipitation, wind, pressure, and clouds, five to six times every day.

The Cultural Heritage Administration evaluated that "It has precisely recorded at a level comparable to modern meteorological observations, such as correcting errors from observation equipment."

The Cultural Heritage Administration predicted that these records will be used for various studies such as climate change in the future.

An official from the Cultural Heritage Administration said. "The records have excellent continuity and are systematic; they not only represent the history of modern meteorological observation in Korea, but also lay out the past meteorological phenomena and climatic characteristics of the Honam area."

After collecting opinions during the 30-day notice period, the Cultural Heritage Committee will decide whether to register it as a cultural heritage.
