SEOUL November 30 (Yonhap) -- Upcoming South Korean movie “Christmas Carol” is about a story where the protagonist Il-woo who gets himself incarcerated in juvenile in order to uncover the trued behind his twin brother Wol-woo’s death on the morning of Christmas.
Although some viewers might expect mind blowing and bloody action scenes, until the movie comes to an end, the film provides viewers with uncomfortable nature of suspicion and uncertainty.
Throughout the last call with his younger twin brother Wol-woo, older twin brother Il-woo who hears his younger brother get beaten up decides to incarcerated at a juvenile after seeing the security footage from the night of his brother’s death in order to bring proper judgment to those who he believes committed the crime.
However the revenge he wanted was not a simple task.
Antagonist Moon Ja-hoon had followers within the juvenile as well.
Il-woo who gets incarcerated immediately gets in trouble with the gang lead by Moon Ja-hoon, collision between Il-woo and the gang led him to a beating session by one of the teachers at the facility, Han Hee-sang acted by actor Heo Dong-won.
Wol-woo’s friend Son Hwan, acted by actor Kim Dong-hwi unveils stories after stories related to the death of his friend to Il-woo while getting bullied by the gang members of Moon Ja-hoon.
One of the teachers within the facility Cho Soon-woo, who outside of the facility worked as a volunteers delivering donated packages to those who are in need of help calms Il-woo down by stating “You are not yourself right now,” and calm Il-woo down from committing a murder.
Moon Ja-hoon who felt threatened by the appearance of Il-woo calls in a gang member who worked as a demolition crew to kick out the people living in a reconstruction area, to kill Il-woo. Despite of the situation Il-woo never gives up on his revenge.
Teacher Cho Soon-woo who felt the change in atmosphere called Il-woo and tries to convince him not to go through with his revenge by stating “Those who live needs to continue on living, if you don’t make it then you will be the only one dead, if you die all the things you have done to get here goes to waste.” However, after multiple trials Cho Soon-woo gives in and joins Il-woo’s plan to seek revenge.
Il-woo seeks his revenge using the 40 minute time period given to the prisoners within the juvenile to take shower in order fight against antagonists.
Piercing uncomfortable nature throughout the movie is explained from the setting director Kim Sung-soo set intentionally.
Throughout the press conference session held on November 29, director Kim Sung-soo addressed “I was not there to film a cool action movie, instead I wanted to see the raw and true nature of violence,” adding “My intentions for the action scenes are to give the audience the uncomfortable feeling instead of satisfaction.”
“Christmas Carol” showcase numerous scenes where the weak gets beaten up by those who are in control, and there are scenes where it features sexual violence as well.
“Nowadays movies dealing with the idea of revenge excludes the victims,” adding “The unfortunate truth is that since Il-woo has the power to beat up the bad guys, therfore seek revenge, however, weak protagonists such as Son Hwan, or Wol-woo has no power to even go against bullies.” addressed director Kim Sung-soo pointing out the sad truth.
Il-woo’s line questioning Cho Soon-woo within the movie “Why do the victims have to forgive the ones inflicting the violence” reminds director’s comment on the film.
“I think I tried my hardest in order to create a film showcasing methods of redemption for those who are too weak to seek revenge” adding “When I read the novel version of ‘Christmas Carol’ those who are left in the shadows were reminded through the looks of Il-woo and Wol-woo,” addressed the director Kim Sung-soo throughout the press conference.
Although the movie might lack in speed compare to other action thriller genre of movie, however the ending where those with power protects the weak and unexpected ending makes “Christmas Carol” stand out among the movies within the similar genre.
Actor Par Jin-young’s take on the character Wol-woo and Il-woo is something to look out for in the movie because they are both very opposite characters.
The movie “Christmas Carol” will premiere through the screen on December 7 and it is rated R.
