SEOUL, Nov. 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actor Lee Sang-yoon (40), who showed off his charms as a caring helper for Cho Yeon-ju (Lee Hanee) in SBS' dark comedy drama "One the Woman," expressed his thoughts on his role.

"I believe Han Seung-wook's main charm was that he always supported Yeon-ju who was struggling all on her own," Lee said in an recent online interview. "(Han Seung-wook) is not someone with a lot of talent or skill," adding, "however he was the only person who gave strength to Yeon-ju when she was going through a difficult time."

"One the Woman" tells the story of an elite prosecutor, Cho Yeon-ju, who wakes up from a coma caused by a car accident and finds herself as Kang Mi-na, a daughter-in-law of a big business group. The drama was loved by many as the genre shifted between comedy and drama while also unfolding a series of humorous events.

Han Seung-wook, played by Lee, returns to Korea to dig into the secrets of his father's death and shows off great chemistry with Cho Yeon-ju when they work together to take down the power of the maliciousl characters. Lee's character was well received by the audience as his role balanced the weight of the drama.

Lee picked "refreshing" as the key word to describe the secret to "One the Woman"'s success. "I think the audience were satisfied vicariously through Cho Yeon-ju because when she faces various frustrating situations, she acts and says things without hesitation," the actor explained.

However, Lee revealed to have a desire in comedy acting. "It was difficult to be the only character maintaining a serious tone in a comical situation," Lee said. "I wanted to be funny as well. If I have the chance, I really want to try acting in a sitcom."

Lee also honestly confessed his regrets in starring as the male protagonist in a female-led drama.

"In the latter half of the drama, I thought Seung-wook would open up more about his father, but it was a shame he couldn't. However, after seeing actress Lee Hanee lead the drama so well on set, I accepted my role. After finding out that the melodrama between Yeon-ju and Seung-wook was loved by many people, I have come to believe that I've done my part," Lee said laughing.

Lee didn't forget to praise Lee Hanee, who plays the leading dual roles, saying, "(Lee Hanee) always led the scenes with joy and was considerate of other actors, which was a lot of help for me."

Regarding his feelings about reuniting with actor Kim Chang-wan, who played Lee's father in the 2017 drama "Whisper," Lee said, "This time, we were able to form a relationship as colleagues rather than father and son," adding, "We were able to get closer through this opportunity, which felt great."

Lee, who is also a graduate of Seoul National University alongside Kim Chang-wan and Lee Hanee, confessed that it was a fun experience to see alumni of different majors come together and act for the same drama.

As for dropping out of the entertainment show "All The Butlers," Lee said, "I felt a limit to what I could bring to the program," adding that he wanted to show the viewers a different side of him.

"I thought I showed the viewers everything I could as an entertainer. I felt it would be difficult for the viewers to see me repeat the same appearance over and over again. Although it might be hard right now, if I become a bigger person, I think I can try participating in entertainment programs again."

Marking his 14th year as an actor this year, Lee said his goal was to "always display a new image" in both entertainment shows and when acting.

"Until now, I think I have been focusing on committing to every moment rather than worrying about my career as an actor. Now, I think I should choose my next work more carefully. I'm also trying to be chosen as a role that shows a completely different side of me."

As a result, the 40-year-old actor said he was happy that "One the Woman" allowed him to challenge himself in portraying a different image of him.

"This time, I went to the filming set to act with more composure and tried to think about acting in a different angle. In other words, I tried to deliver my character in a way I haven't done before. I think this drama will remain as a gift in my acting career."
