SEOUL, April 2 (Yonhap) -- MBC TV's music mystery entertainment show, "King of Mask Singer" celebrated their 6th anniversary.
Kim Sung-joo, a broadcaster who has been the main host of the program for six years said, "It's my first time to work with an entertainment program for six years without taking a break. I think it is a great honor and blessing to be the emcee for this show."
"I never thought I could do this for so long. I think I could be where I am today because of the hard work the production team has put in as well as the love given by our viewers," he added.
"King of Mask Singer", which first aired as a special pilot episode for the Lunar New Year in 2015 and began broadcasting in April of the same year, is a music entertainment show where stars who appear in masks compete with their singing skills. The identities of the singers are not revealed until they have been eliminated and the winner becomes the new Mask King.
Ha Hyun-woo, the vocalist of the Korean rock band, Guckkasten, has nine consecutive wins on the show, which is the highest number of wins achieved out of the contestants and as well as the 49 singers appointed as the Mask King.
Singer Son Seung-yeon, Yang Yo-seop tied for second place while singer Sohyang, Lee Seok-hoon, Kang Seung-yoon, and Kim Yeon-ja tied for third place.
"About 1,200 masked singers have appeared on our show for six years," said Kim Moon-ki, the producer of "King of Mask Singer". "It is not easy to recruit eight singers for each episode but we are trying to bring more people who have recently become popular, online influencers, or memorable singers," he added.
"King of Mask Singer", which celebrated their 300th episode on the 28th of last month, has maintained a 9% in viewership so far and airs on Sunday evenings.
In addition, it has become a representative "Korean Wave" entertainment show by exporting the show's format to more than 30 countries including, Thailand, Germany, France, Australia and the Netherlands. The show proved its popularity in the United States last year when they launched, "The Masked Dancer," a spin-off version of "The Masked Singer."
Kim Sung-joo said, "We will work harder to present our audience with entertaining content on the weekends. I want to invite all of the audience to the recording studio as soon as the corona virus infection is over."
