'Squid Game' Wi Ha-jun, becomes ambassador of his hometown Wando

SEOUL, Jan. 19 (Yonhap) -- Wando-gun in South Jeolla Province has appointed S. Korean actor Wi Ha-jun as its ambassador.

The actor, born in Wando-gun Soan-myeon, debuted in 2015 and has actively performed in diverse fields of genres, such as action and romance.

Wi Ha-jun played the role of the police Hwang Jun-ho in the drama “Squid Game” on Netflix, which is the global OTT(Over The Top) service platform.

Since Squid Game gained popularity from all around the world, the actor’s Instagram followers exceeded 9,900,000 as he became a global star.

The county said they decided to appoint Wi Ha-jun as an ambassador as the actor was born in Wando-gun and he also showed affection towards his hometown by mentioning it several times in the interviews and TV shows since the debut.

At the appointment ceremony held in Wando County, Wi mentioned, “I’m happy and honored to be an ambassador for my hometown, Wando-gun,” adding, “I will try my best to introduce charms and news of Wando from now on.”
