SEOUL, Mar. 24 (Yonhap) -- During the press conference held at Lotte Cinema Konkuk University on Friday, South Korean actress Lee Ha-nee said, “I wanted a film like ours to be marked in the history of the Korean film industry. That was why I decided to shoot this film.”

The upcoming comedy film “Killing Romance,” which is set to be released next month, tells the story of a retired star actress Yeo-rae (played by Lee Ha-nee) struggling to run away from her husband Jonathan Na (Lee Sun-kyun), a chaebol in an island. She concocts an escape plan by getting help from her fan Bum-woo (Gong Myung) and Young-chan (Bae Yoo-ram) to return to her acting career.

Director Lee Won-seok, who is best known for producing the 2013 rom-com “How to Use Guys with Secret Tips,” took the helm. “I loved the main message of our script,” he answered when asked about the background of his production.

“We often feel trapped in our lives, and we feel like something is holding us back. Our script delivers the message that we can get the courage to change our lives from someone near us. I fell in love with the message instantaneously and kicked off producing right away,” the director added.

Lee Ha-nee said, “As an actress, I could very much relate to Yeo-rae, and I felt sorry for her,” adding, “You will be able to follow Yeo-rae, who initially made the wrong choice to marry someone only to escape from something else, growing up doing what she wants to do at her will for the very first time.”

What makes this upcoming film even more enticing is Lee Sun-kyun’s unconventional transformation. He, who is best known for lead roles in heavy films such as the mega-hit black comedy thriller film “Parasite” and political drama film “Kingmaker,” as well as the psychological television series “My Mister” and crime series “Payback,” will have a perfect transformation by showing off his comical charms.

Director Lee, who said that he initially had Lee Sun-kyun in mind for casting as the role of Jonathan after watching Lee’s television commercial for a gum supplement, said, “Lee is one of the most humorous people I know,” adding, “I asked him to be Jonathan since I wanted to reveal his disclosed and yet unknown sense of humor.”

Meanwhile, Lee, who introduced his role as an icon of madness and obsession who is also an epitome of narcissism, said, “I have never played such a role with so much exaggeration, which made it more enthralling.”

“I think our film cannot be specified into one genre. What makes our story eye-catching is how it breaks down all the existing structures and rules. We busted out into laughter while shooting, and I hope our joy could also be delivered to the audience,” the 48-year-old actor added.

In the meantime, Bae Yoo-ram said, “I think I will eventually wish to get eyeballs that have never watched this movie. Every time I watch our film, I wish it to be the first time,” adding that he expects to be many audiences watching the film for several times.

Dancer Monica, who made herself known by appearing in Mnet’s smash-hit dancing competition show “Street Woman Fighter,” also has credits as a choreographer. In regards to the dancer, Director Lee recalled, “I just blindly asked her to be in charge of our film’s choreographs, as I have known her for a while. I respect the way she treats herself and others.”

“I hope everyone who is craving for something different and authentic, those who wish to experience something new and original, as well as those who are sensitive to trends to all go watch our film in the theater,” the director said while giving his last speech at the press conference.
