Although South Korean pianist Lee Hyuk (21) did advance into the final round of the competition, Lee, unfortunately, did not make it to the winner rankings.

Starting from 1927, the Chopin Competition in Warsaw began in honor of the Polish composer and pianist Frédéric Chopin. The piano competition is now one of the world's top three music competitions along with the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia and Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium.

The music event, which is held once every five years in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland and Chopin's hometown, was postponed for a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and held for the first time in six years. Within the competition, only pianists born in 1990-2004 were eligible to enter and perform with Chopin's music.

This year, more than 500 pianists applied from around the world and only a total of 87 contestants were admitted to the main competition. The top 12 out of 87 pianists, including Lee, passed all three main stages and were qualified to compete in the finals. Kim Soo-yeon (27) also advanced to the third round, but failed to advance to the finals.

Lee played Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2, the second common task among the finalists the previous day.

South Korean pianists who advanced to the finals include Lim Dong-min, Lim Dong-hyek, and Son Yeol-eum in 2005 and Cho Seong-jin in 2015. Cho was the first Korean to win the competition at the age of 21, while brothers Lim Dong-min and Dong-hyek tied for third place.
