장욱진을 만나 사람을 생각하며

경기도 양주 시립 장욱진 미술관. 가는 가을이 아쉬워 어릴 적 친구와 찾아갔다. 아프고 난 다음부터 친구는 부쩍 우울하고 불안정했다.
더워진 가을로 북한산의 단풍은 예전같이 화려하지 않았지만, 미술관이 있는 양주에 가까이 갈수록 친구의 얼굴에는 자연스런 편안함이 스며들었다.
빨갛게 물든 단풍나무를 보며 친구가 웃었다. 단풍 진 나무처럼 어여뻤다.
어떤 계절에 찾아가도 장욱진 미술관이 좋은 건, 산과 시내 사이에 얹어져 그 모습이 튀지 않으면서도 감각적이라는 점이다.
개천이 흐르는 언덕 위 하얀 미술관, ‘김수근 건축상’을 받은 최 페레이라의 작품이다. 폴리카보네이트 재질로 만들어진 벽이 박공지붕까지 흰색으로 쭉 연결된 면은 익숙하지 않은 느낌이 들지만, 화가 장욱진 그림처럼 이야기가 있는 미술관 전경으로 자리 잡았다.
장욱진 화가에 대해 모르고 찾아갔을 때도 난 그의 그림 속 집과 아이들, 가족과 큰 나무, 까치와 작은 가축들 모습이 정겹고 좋았다.
선이 굵고 사물의 모습이 간결해 강렬한 인상을 주었고 따듯함이 느껴졌다. 그의 그림은 아이의 그림과도 흡사하다. 스스로 "나는 심플(simple)하다"라고 말했다.
‘한국 추상미술의 개척자들’ 기획전이 열리고 있었다.
화가 장욱진은 ‘사실을 새롭게 보자’라는 주제의식으로 1947년 김환기, 유영국 등과 ‘신사실파’를 결성했다.
그들의 철학대로 장욱진은 자연 사물들을 그대로 재현하는 것이 아니라 사물 안에 내재한 근원적이고 정신적인 본질을 추구했다.
장욱진은 어려서부터 그림에 비상함을 보였고, 이중섭 김환기 박수근 유영국 등과 함께 손꼽히는 2세대 서양화가이면서 1세대 모더니스트이다.
그의 그림은 지속성이 있고 일관적이지만, 자유로운 변화가 느껴진다.
나는 화가 김환기의 푸른색을 보며 행복해 한다. 장욱진의 자화상 그림에서도 마찬가지다. 노란색 색감이 묘하게 화려하다.
영국은 봄에도 비바람이 뼈 속까지 파고들어 춥다. 장욱진의 자화상을 보면, 찬바람에도 흔들거리며 정원에서 피어나던 노란 수선화의 몸짓이 생각난다.
자유로운 나의 생각은 신화의 주인공인 ‘죽기까지 자신을 사랑한 나르시스(narcissus)’로까지 이어졌다.
자화상은 한국전쟁 피란 중에 그렸다. 떠 있는 몇 조각 구름과 나무 두 그루, 꺾여 걸어 온 붉은 길과 그를 향해 날아오는 네 마리 새, 노란 황금 들녘은 풍요를 넘어 화려함 마저 느끼게 한다.
길 끝에 콧수염을 달고 긴 우산을 든 마른 영국 신사가 서 있다. 자신이 자신을 생각하는 모습이었으리라 생각된다.
일본에서 유학하고 돌아와 폐허가 된 고국에서 화가로서의 이상적인 자신을 표현한 거 같다. ‘앞으로의 길은 더 이상 보이지 않고 나는 길 위에 서 있다’는 상념. ‘단호하게 나로서!’, 라는 화가의 의지가 엿보인다.
장욱진 미술관 티켓 하나로 반대편 민복진 미술관도 함께 관람했다.
가족에 대한 사랑의 주제가 이어진다. 민복진의 조각은 재료가 돌과 청동인데 전혀 차갑게 느껴지지 않아 신기했다.
모자(母子)상과 가족상에 그들과 나누었던 사랑과 기쁨을 담고 있어 가능한 일이다. 그의 대리석 조각상 또한 미니멀하고 예쁘다. 소장하고픈 마음까지 들었다.
하나님 안에 있으면서 행복하지 않은 자녀들과 부모들을 보면 안타까웠다. 난 하나님께 헌신해 말씀으로 가정들을 세우는 일을 해왔다.
성경에 "결혼한 남자는 행복한 사람입니다"라는 말씀을 두 군데서 읽었다. 그러고 보면 결혼은 아내보다는 남편에게 더 좋은 것이 아닌가 싶다.
화가 장욱진 그림처럼 우리들이 이룬 가정들이 따듯하고 다정함과 정겨움을 나누기를 바라며 친절한 말이 오가기를 기도한다.
어쩌면 우리 인생에도 화가 장욱진 그림처럼 생략되고 절제된 사랑이 필요할는지 모를 일이다.
장욱진이 한 말을 인용한다.
“나는 직관을 믿는다. 무엇이든 더불어 오래 사고하기를 근본적으로 거부한다. 가족이 생각나면 언제라도 맨발인 그대로 혜화동 집으로 달려가곤 했다.
.....결국 내 인생의 주인은 나이기에 나를 철저히 소모시키는 작업에만 흥미가 있을 뿐이다.“

[K-Traveler] Meeting Chang Ucchin, contemplating human

Chang Ucchin Art Museum is located in Yangju City, Gyeonggi Province. I visited the place with a childhood friend before the autumn slips away. After an illness, my friend became increasingly melancholic and unstable.
The foliage on Mt. Bukhansan wasn't as vibrant as before, but as we approached Yangju, where the art museum is located, a natural tranquility took over my friend's face.
The crimson-stained maple trees made my friend smile. They were as beautiful as the autumn leaves.
Regardless of the season, what's wonderful about Chang Ucchin Art Museum is that it blends in sensibly between the mountains and the city, without standing out.
Perched on a hill with a flowing stream, the white art museum, a work by Choi Pereira who received the Kim Swoo Geun Architecture Prize, stood with its polycarbonate walls seamlessly connected to the pitched roof. Though the material was unfamiliar, the museum's view, like a painting by Chang Ucchin, told a story.
Even before understanding Chang Ucchin, the painter, I found his paintings of houses, children, families, big trees, magpies, and small livestock endearing and delightful.
The bold lines and simple depiction of objects left a strong impression and emanated warmth. His paintings resembled those of a child. He’d go calling himself "I am simple."
During our visit, an exhibition titled “Pioneers of Korean Abstract Art” was on display.
Chang Ucchin, with a theme of "Let's see the truth anew," co-founded “sinsasil-pa,” meaning new realism group, with fellow artists Kim Whanki, Yoo Young-kuk, and others in 1947.
In line with their philosophy, Chang Ucchin pursued the intrinsic and spiritual essence within objects rather than merely replicating the nature.
He was renowned for his exceptional talent in painting since a young age. He earned his place among the second-generation Western-style painters alongside Lee Jung-seob, Kim Whanki, Park Soo-keun, and Yoo Young-kuk, and a first-generation modernist.
His paintings possess continuity and consistency, yet ooze a sense of free-spirited change within them.
The blue in Kim Whanki's paintings makes me feel happy. The same is true for Chang Ucchin's self-portrait paintings, where the yellow hues strangely exude brilliance.
In England, even in spring, the biting winds cut to the bone. Chang Ucchin's self-portraits remind me of the gestures of yellow winter aconites blooming in the garden despite the chilling wind.
My free thoughts went on to the protagonist of the mythology, “Narcissus, who loved himself until death.”
Chang Ucchin painted his self-portrait amidst the chaos of the Korean War. Several floating clouds, two trees, a winding red path, four birds flying towards him, and a vibrant yellow golden field evoke not just the abundance but also the flamboyance.
At the end of the path stands a gaunt English gentleman with a mustache, holding a long umbrella. It seemed to depict him contemplating himself.
The work seems to express his ideal self as a painter, as a man who studied in Japan and returned to his homeland in ruins: “The road ahead is no longer visible, but I stand on the road.” It hints at the artist's determination, "Resolutely, this is me!"
With a ticket to Chang Ucchin Art Museum, I also visited the nearby Min Bokjin Museum of Art.
The theme of familial love went on. Min Bokjin's sculptures, made of stone and bronze, felt surprisingly warm despite the cold materials.
His “Mother and Child” and “Family” sculptures encapsulate the love and joy shared between them, a remarkable feat. His marble sculptures are minimalistic and beautiful, evoking desire to own one.
I’ve felt a sense of sorrow watching unhappy children and their parents despite being under the love of God. I’ve devoted my life to raising up families in God's words.
There are two phrases in the Bible that say a married man is a happy person. Considering this, marriage might be more favorable for the husband than the wife.
I wish for our homes, much like Chang Ucchin's paintings, to be warm, affectionate, and full of fondness, kindness and tender words.
Perhaps understated and restrained love is what we really need in our lives, just as shown in the charms of Chang Ucchin's paintings.
Let me finish with a quote from Chang Ucchin.
"I believe in intuition. I fundamentally reject dwelling on anything for too long. Whenever thoughts of family arise, I would rush back to my Hyehwa-dong house in my bare feet. ...In the end, I’m the sole owner of my life; I’m only interested in the tasks that entirely consume me."
