SEOUL, July 8 (Yonhap) -- "Fired Up!," a Taiwanese television adaptation of the hit Korean webtoon "Itaewon Class," will premiere on the streaming platform HBO Max on July 31, according to industry sources Wednesday.
"Fired Up!" follows a young man determined to uncover the truth behind his father's death while fighting to protect his family's restaurant.
The series reinterprets the original's memorable characters and coming-of-age story within a Taiwanese cultural setting.
Taiwanese singer and actor Eric Chou stars as Zhou Luyong, the counterpart to Park Sae-ro-yi from the Korean original. Chou also performs the drama's original soundtrack.
Hong Kong actress Angela Yuen plays Zhao Yixuan, the counterpart to Jo Yi-seo, while Taiwanese actor Lin Ching-lun portrays Zhang Jianyuan, based on Jang Geun-won from the original story.
Originally serialized on Kakao Webtoon from 2016 to 2020, "Itaewon Class" tells the story of young entrepreneurs pursuing their dreams while staying true to their convictions and principles.
The webtoon has amassed more than 420 million views in South Korea alone. It is also Kakao Entertainment's most widely licensed title overseas and is credited with helping raise the global profile of Korean webtoons.
Localization projects for the story are also in the planning and development stages in China, the Philippines and Vietnam.
The live-action Korean drama adaptation, starring Park Seo-jun, became a major hit after its release in 2020. Director Nia DaCosta later revealed that she cast Park in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film "The Marvels" after watching the series.
A Japanese adaptation, "Roppongi Class," premiered in 2022, while a musical adaptation bearing the original title debuted in June last year.
