SEOUL, August 22 (Yonhap) -- The “Sangju Suam Jongtaek,” where the ancestral rites of third son of Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607) was performed, has been designated as a national cultural property.
Cultural Heritage Adminstration announced on Monday house of the Joseon Dynasty “Sangju Suam Jongtaek,” located in Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, has been designated as a national cultural property.
“Suam Jongtaek” is known to be the head house where Ryu jin’s ancestral rites “Bool-cheon-hee” took place.
“Bool-cheo-hee” is an ancestral tablet for people who had high moral influence and done a great service to the country to be placed at shrine forever.
“Suam Jongtaek” is evaluated to have high historical and cultural value with its geographical location and structure.
According to the Cultural Heritage Adminstration, “Suam Jongtaek” is located where mountains Songni, Palgong, and Irwol join and rivers Nakdonggang and Wi meet.
It is believed that Ryu Seong-ryong’s best pupil Chong Kyong-se from Ubok family decided the lot. Ubok’s head house is located 32 km away.
“Suam Jongtaek” is consisted of ‘ㅁ’ shaped main building where the An-chae and Sarang-chae connect as one and separate buildings Noksacheong and shrine.
Main building in the architecture style of northern part of Gyeong-Buk is unique in that a hall of An-chae is heightened to be like an upper floor. There is a word written with ink on wooden framework that it was built in 1858.
‘ㄱ’ shaped building Noksacheong in front of main building is presumed to be where Ryu jin’s seventh generation Ryu Hu-jo who was given a government job as “Bong-jo-ha” and used it to either manage feudal allowance or to stay.
“Bong-jo-ha” is a government job especially given to around 70 years old retired bureaucrat over second grade.
Cultural Heritage Administration explained, “It is rare to find such building to be left as private house,” adding, “Although the building is simple like any other clean government employee’s, It has historical value to understand the social structure of that time.”
Various ancient rituals including “Bool-cheon-wi” are inherited until today at “Suam Jongtaek.”
The building shows living culture of upper class in Sang-ju area before the 19th century very well as various traditional relics such as Receipt of feudal allowance “Nok-pae,” letters, literature and palanquin, and official uniforms still remain, said Cultural Heritage Administration.
“Imjillok” and “Imjalok” written by Ryu Jin and an writing “Un-hyeon-gan-cheob” between Heungseon Daewongun and Ryu Hu-jo were also preserved. These materials are managed by university and museum.
“Suam Jongtaek” also has interesting stories.
Heungseon Daewongun once lived here and identified people in Youngnam area. There is a theory Jongtaek’s bamboo folding screen is by Heungseon Daewongun. After Gojong rose to the throne, Ryu Hu-jo was appointed as vice minister of Joseon administrative agency, second vice-premier etc.
Ryu Hu-jo, who stayed clean even after various governmental positions, served boiled pure water in brass ware to a guest when he was out of feudal allowance.
Ryu Jin’s 11th generation Ryu Woo-gook participated in activities of provisional government for Shanghai, China and worked with Kim Ji-sup from Joseon heroic group.
