SEOUL, Nov. 17 (Yonhap) -- Three kilns, which were used to make celadon and pottery, were found in a large historic kiln site of Goryeo Dynasty in Haenam, South Jeolla Province.

The Haenam County and Korea Cultural Heritage Association announced Wednesday that it had conducted an excavation survey at the 646 Jinsan-ri, Sani-myeon, Haenam county area to find three kilns, three landfills with abandoned pottery, and a borrow pit, where pottery was made during the Goryeo Dynasty.

The first kiln was found to be a medium-sized mud kiln that is 23m long, while the second kiln measured to about 10m in length while the last one was found to be an underground kiln with 4.5m in length.

In the landfill near the kiln, pieces of ceramics such as celadon, black glazed porcelain and pottery were excavated.

"The first kiln mainly had pieces of pottery and iron glazed porcelains while the second kiln contained flower shaped plates and "Haemurigup" celadons or bowls with circular stands at the bottom, were found," an official from the Korea Cultural Heritage Association said. "It was revealed that pottery was made for a long time at the main site of Jinsan-ri."

"The first and second kilns also seem to have been operated at different times," the official continued. "The underground kilns are known to be used for making pottery, however we believe people made ceramics instead."

In addition, celadon, black porcelain, and pottery similar in shape to those found in the sea where old ships came from, such as in Eoduli of Wando county or the island of Mado, Taean County, were discovered from the site.

"'Juksanhyeon,' which refers to Haenam today, has been identified on a wooden tablit of Mado 1, a shipwreck of the Goryeo Dynasty, , and Haenam has been presumed to be the production site of some artifacts found on the ocean floor," the investigation team said.

The main site of Jinsan-ri, Haenam, is a place where ceramics were produced between the 11-13 century and about 100 kiln ruins are distributed. Near the main site of Jinsan-ri, there is also the main site of Sindeok-ri, Hwawon-myeon, Haenam, where celadon was made in the early Goryeo era.
