Pre-sale of ‘Pachinko’ revised edition ranking No.1 in Bestseller

SEOUL, July 15 (Yonhap) -- The newly published novel "Pachinko" by Korean-American writer Lee Min-jin has topped the bestseller list with the start of pre-sale, announced Publisher Influential on Friday.


According to the Publisher, first revised edition of Pachinko began pre-sale in major online bookstores such as Kyobo Book Centre, Yes24, and Aladdin on Monday and ranked No.1 in weekly bestseller chart of Kyobo Book Centre and Aladdin.

The number of applicants signing up for "Notice alarm for Interested Writers," an event held by Yes24 ahead of the publication of the revised version of Pachinko earlier this month, exceeded 20,000.

The first revised version of the book, which aims to modify the mistranslation through the new translation and keep the original work’s intention, will be officially published on July 27 and will be released on July 28. The second volume will be published at the end of August.

The publisher said, “After 3 months of preparation, it will have new translation and cover for readers.” New cover depicted Pachinko machine as flower and butterfly.

First revision includes author’s signature and preface for Korean readers

Pachinko depicted ups and downs of 4th generation Korean Japaneses who crossed to Osaka, Japan from Yeongdo, Busan. It was published in U.S in 2017 and attracted attention after being nominated for the National Book Award.

The book regained popularity early this year when it was produced into Apple TV+ drama starring Youn Yuh-jung and Lee Min-ho. Publisher Influential won the publication right of Pachinko after publication with publisher Literature & Thought expired.

Pachinko is a second book from Korean Diaspora trilogy after writer’s debut novel “FREE FOOD for MILLIONAIRES ” (2008). The writer is now living in New York, U. S. A writing “American Academy.”
