GANGNEUNG, Feb. 21 (Yonhap) -- A young white-naped crane was spotted spending winter alone in Gangneung, Gangwon-do, by an environmental activist in the region.
The bird, first observed in late December, has recently continued to be seen upstream of the Namdaecheon Stream.
The white-naped crane, an endangered species with about 4,500 to 5,000 remaining worldwide, is known to live in large groups of 50 to 300 in winter.
It comes to the Korean Peninsula in late October and returns in late March of the following year.
In this respect, it is presumed that the bird has been lost after parting from its parents.
