SEOUL, May 1 (Yonhap) -- From the second generation of a ruthless chaebol who beats people without guilt, a son who becomes smaller in front of a strict mother, a runaway soldier who could not stand the bullying in the military, to the victim of a gun accident suffering from extreme post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Kim Woo-seok (28), who played Noh Tae-nam, a character who’s more than just a “villain” in the tvN Monday-Tuesday drama “Military Prosecutor Doberman” visited the Yonhap News Office building in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
When asked about the first impression of Noh Tae-nam, he laughed and said “It wasn’t good.”
“If I had a friend like Tae-nam, I wouldn’t even want to talk to him. However, looking at a character that I had to act, the character itself looked very attractive. For a while he’s a bad person, and sometimes he’s ‘pitiful’ in front of his mother. There’s just a lot to show, so I thought it’d be really fun.”
“I wanted Noh Tae-nam to be the worse than anyone else,” said Kim Woo-seok, who challenged acting as a villain for the first time. “It felt good when people badmouthed Noh Tae-nam because that means I did do well.”
However, as much as “Military Prosecutor Doberman” deals with sensitive subjects including mass shooting caused by bullying in the military, he recalled, “When acting those scenes, I tried to act as carefully as possible while considering all the different perspectives possible.”
The character, Noh Tae-nam is also a “monster” created by his mother Noh Hwa-young (Oh Yeon-soo). Hwa-Young, who does everything for money and power, abuses her son if he does not act according to her plan, and her son is seen being more and more ruined through this.
Kim Woo-seok said that there was a mixed feeling from “wanting to get love from his mom (Noh Hwa-young)” and “wanting to run away from his mom.” He explained, “I acted with the feeling of really hating my mother but also missing and loving her so much.”
Regarding the actor Oh Yeon-soo who plays Noh Noh-young, he boasted that he was even given a sticker in the Pokemon bread, which was recently 'sold out' and said, "She even calls me ‘son’."
“I wish I could work with her in other works. At that time, I would like our conversation to be more like what normal mother and sons have, like maybe complaining that I want ‘Bean paste stew not kimchi stew!’. I just wish it wouldn’t be a conversation about grenades or death.”
Regarding the ending of Tae-nam, who gives up everything he has and lives while volunteering at the abandoned dog center, he said, “Even though he decides to live a better life, because his sin was too big, I think it’s better ending up as a person doing good deeds than just dying. I hope Tae-nam will continue to live like that.”
Kim Woo-seok, who got spotlight after 5 years of debut with “Military prosecutor Doberman,” also got attention for being the younger brother of MeloMance’s vocalist Kim Min-seok.
“I think it would feel really good if my brother’s voice appeared in the scene I acted. Of course, I also do wish a little that I would be able to sing an OST with my own voice. (laughs)”
