SEOUL, Oct. 26 (Yonhap) -- Trails of roads along the inner ring road of Pungnaptoseong Fortress’ West side which is assumed to be the royal castle of Hanseong period of Baekje have been confirmed.
Through an excavation of the Pungnaptoseong Fortress’ West wall, traces of passageways made by Baekje people like the inner circulation roads in Seoul, the Ganghwa National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage announced Tuesday.
“Although, there were mentions about the fortress’ North-South road and an East-West road in a 2009 research report, this is the first remains of a circulation road ever to have been discovered,” said an official from the Institute.
The remains are 6 meters wide, but it seems to have been far much wider. At the sides of the roads, 1~1.2 meters wide and 0.8 meters deep holes were found.
There were traces of cartwheels and footprints of cattle and horses on the road. The cartwheel was 1.2~1.8 meters big and it is seems to have touched the road by 8~15 centimeters.
“The found road seems to have started from the West Gates, spread across the fortress’ walls and connected with the North-South road in the future village. The goods that went through the West gates would have been carried into the fortress on a cart,” said an official from the Institute.
“The holes on the sides of the road seem to indicate frequent mining and mending as the road changed,” added the official.
A pot of a boar’s bag teeth and dog bones was found from the base part of the wall. They were identified to have been placed there to suppress the badness when building the outer door transition.
The excavation team found out that the wall was built based on natural embankments near the Han River and that its basis was hardened with various plants.
Furthermore, they discovered a panchuk construction that proves that the fortress is a panchuk fortress which is built as a square construction in which different kinds of soils are built up.
The results will be open to the public through an online academic contest to be held at Seoul Hanseong Baekje Museum on the 28th.
Through the contest, researchers will present themes dealing with “The definition of fortress construction during the Three Kingdom Era,” “The construction of Pungnaptoseong Eastern Wall and its expansion” and “Earthen fortress construction technology during the Hanseong period of Baekje.”
The Institute will release the excavation site on the 9th to the 11th of November. Applies are available from the 1st to the 5th of November.
