SEOUL, Sept. 18 (Yonhap) -- 

Christopher Nolan's film "Odyssey" surpassed 11 million moviegoers on Friday, the 45th day since its release.

 

Distributor Universal Pictures said the film's cumulative audience exceeded 11 million as of Friday morning.

 

It is the sixth foreign film released in South Korea to surpass the 11 million mark. The five films that reached the milestone previously are "Avengers: Endgame" (2019), with about 13.93 million admissions; "Frozen 2" (2019), about 13.74 million; "Avatar" (2009), about 13.62 million; "Aladdin" (2019), about 12.55 million; and "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018), about 11.21 million.

 

"Odyssey" has also narrowed the gap with "Avengers: Infinity War," the fifth-highest-grossing foreign film in South Korea, to around 200,000 admissions.

 

"Odyssey" follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, on his journey home after leading Greece to victory in the Trojan War. Based on Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey," Nolan filmed the entire movie with IMAX film cameras to bring the grandeur of Greek mythology to the screen.

 

Released on Aug. 5, the film became the second movie this year, following "The Man Who Lives with the King," to surpass 10 million admissions.

 

The film had topped the daily box office for 42 consecutive days after its release before losing the No. 1 spot for the first time to "Intern," starring Choi Min-sik, which opened on Sept. 16.

 

"Odyssey," however, continues to lead in advance ticket sales and is expected to continue attracting moviegoers. As of 12:30 p.m. Friday, it accounted for 21.6 percent of advance ticket sales, ahead of "The Assassin(s)" (17.2 percent), opening Sept. 23, and "Intern" (15.1 percent).

 

The number of advance ticket buyers stood at about 127,000.
