SEOUL, April 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actress Shim Eun-kyung, who is active in both Korea and Japan, will star in director Miyake Sho’s upcoming film Days at the Sea (working title), distributor AtNine Film announced on Friday.

The film is set to premiere in Japan this November, followed by a theatrical release in Korea this December.

The story follows a screenwriter named “Lee” (played by Shim), who undergoes a transformative journey after encountering “Benzo” (portrayed by Tsutsumi Shinichi), the owner of a lodge nestled in a snowy mountain village. The film is based on manga works by Yoshiharu Tsuge, including Seaside Tsurugi and Ben-san of the Hon-yarado.

“This was the most captivating script I’ve read in recent years,” Shim said, adding, “I hope the audience will feel as though they’re embarking on a journey alongside Lee.”

Director Miyake, considered one of Japan’s rising auteurs, is known for And Your Bird Can Sing (2020), You Made My Dawn (2022), and All the Long Nights (2024), all of which were invited to the Berlin International Film Festival.

Miyake previously expressed admiration for Shim during a press conference at the Jeonju International Film Festival, calling her “one of the most respected actors of our generation.”
