LOS ANGELES, March 18 (Yonhap) -- Hollywood horror film “UMMA,” whose title is the Korean pronunciation of ‘Mother,’ will be released in the United States.

Distributor Sony Pictures posted on Twitter that “UMMA” will be aired exclusively in movie theaters starting from March 18 (local time).

The film was written and directed by Korean American filmmaker Iris K. Shim and the Korean Canadian star Sandra Oh played the main role.

Sam Raimi, who is known for creating the “Evil Dead” and the “Spider-man” trilogy, participated as a producer of the new horror movie.

“UMMA” depicts the supernatural horror experienced by Korean American character Amanda (Sandra Oh).

Amanda, who lives on a rural farm with her daughter, receives the cremated ashes of her deceased estranged mother.

Amanda then sees her mother’s spirit and is overcome with the fear of turning into her deceased mother.

NBC News reported that the film portrays the generational trauma inherent in Asian women.

Director Shim said, “Most ghost stories look for ways to get rid of the ghost, but what if the spirit was your mother?” adding, “It is important for us to acknowledge the failures and personal pain our mothers experienced.”

Shim is well known for the documentary “The House of Suh” (2010) which depicts the American dream of a Korean immigrant family that ends in tragedy.

The director showed her presence by continuing to win awards in various U.S. film festivals. “UMMA” is the fictional directorial debut of Shim.
