SEOUL, August 24 (Yonhap) -- Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, announced on Wednesday that during the 6th excavation survey of Simgokseowon Confucian Academy, Yongin, located in Sanghyeon-dong,Suji-gu, which was jointly promoted by the Cultural Heritage Administration, the remains of a rest area for Confucian scholars, with a pond site and a water way during the Joseon Dynasty has been discovered within the academy.
Founded in 1605,Simgokseowon Confucian Academy, enshrines Jo Gwang-jo (Jeongam), the leader of the powerful Sarim faction during the reign of King Jungjong, and has been designated as a National Historic Site No. 530 in 2015.
This place is one of 47 Confucian Academies in Korea that were not damaged even after Heungseon Daewongun's order to abolish Confucian Academies in 1871.
The city conducted the 6th excavation from May till August 4, and discovered the site of a square-shaped pond with a round island in the center.
The outside of the pond was built by stacking stones, and the length and width measures the same at 12.7m.
In addition, three water canals and one water outlet were also found.
Relics including a plain roof tile, pottery, and porcelain pieces were also found in the vicinity.
"We have achieved the results of excavating the original location of the pond along with the water outlet even though there was no historical data," an official from Yongin City said. "This investigation is very meaningful in that we have obtained archaeological data about the rest area of Confucian scholars during the Joseon Dynasty."
