IU's agency sues individuals for defamation

SEOUL, Aug. 7 (Yonhap) -- IU's agency, LEdam Entertainment, on Monday said it has initiated legal action against individuals who spread malicious rumors about the K-pop diva.

The agency stated through its official Instagram account, "On May 4th this year, we filed a criminal complaint for defamation of false facts against those who spread blatant falsehoods about IU, including claiming she is a spy, both online and offline."

Recently, a post emerged on an online community claiming that leaflets alleging IU's involvement as a spy were found in some regions, including Ulsan.

The agency said, "After filing the criminal complaint, investigators have identified the suspects (who spread false facts). However, the suspects have been uncooperative in the investigation so far, causing difficulties for the responsible investigators. Therefore, our legal representative is urging for swift progress in the investigation by submitting additional materials."

Furthermore, the agency added, "We have confirmed that the leaflets cannot be removed arbitrarily, so we are actively seeking legal methods to fundamentally prevent such acts."

The agency also shared the progress of another incident from May when IU was accused of plagiarism by a civilian.

"We have submitted attorney's opinions three times in May and July, proving that the accusation lacks legal basis. Currently, we are waiting for the investigative authorities' decision."

In addition, the agency has submitted criminal complaints against those who wrote posts alleging IU's plagiarism online. The company is currently taking legal action against approximately 100 individuals who posted malicious comments.

"We compiled over 1,700 posts containing plagiarism rumors online and filed criminal complaints against 58 suspects with Seoul Gangnam Police Station for defamation based on false facts," the agency revealed.

In the same vein, they posted, "We have filed criminal complaints against about 150 individuals who posted sexually explicit content and offensive remarks against the artist three times from March to July."

The agency said, "In order to prevent the recurrence of malicious comments, we will continue to pursue investigations and hold those responsible legally accountable."
