Conductor Jaap Van Zweden to work with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra starting in July 2023

SEOUL November 10 (Yonhap) -- Upcoming music director of the Seoul philharmonic Orchestra conductor Jaap Van Zweden will be hosting a concert featuring pieces by Beethoven, Dmitrii Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and more during second half of 2023.


Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, disclosed the 2023 line up and programs on Thursday.

Conductor Jaap Van Zweden who is currently directing at the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, will be transferring as a conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra starting on the second half of the 2023.

Jaap Van Zweden will be performing Beethoven’s symphony No 7, No 9, Tchaikovsky’s symphony No 4, No 5, Shostakovich’s symphony No 5 and more widely known pieces in total of four times in South Korea starting on July of 2023 followed by November and December. In total, director Jaap Van Zweden will be performing 8 shows in South Korea.

Moreover, renown artists’ will also be perform on stages throughout 2023.

On March of 2023, world class female classical artists Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Lisa Batiashvili, Elina Vahala, and more will perform a collaborative stage. Also Violinist Joshua Bell, Cellist Jian Wang, pianist Pierre Laurent Aimard and more are expected to collaborate with the orchestra.

Moreover, South Korean classical artist who lead the wave of K-classic will perform as well.

Cellist Choi Ha-young who won the 2022 Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition will collaborate with the Seoul Symphony Orchestra for the first time. She will be performing Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme.

Also violinist Kim Bom Sori who has recently signed a contract with world class classic label Deutsche Grammophon and released a solo album on June of 2021 will partake in collaboration with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

Pianist Park Jae-hong who won the 2022 Busoni International Piano competition, will be collaborating with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra on May 2023 on Piano Concerto by Rachmaninoff.

First ever South Korean Pianist to have won the van Cliburn international competition in 2017, Sunwoo Yekwon will collaborate with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra on Piano Concerto No 2 by Chopin in June of 2023, under the lead of Russian conductor Mikhail Pletnev. This will be conductor Mikhail Pletnev’s first time leading the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

Conductor Osmo Vanska who’s contract with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra ends on March of 2023 will continue on with his career by resuming his Sibelius cycle.

Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra will kick off their season by showcasing a collaborative performance with Helena Juntunen on pieces by Sibelius directed for vocals on January 12 and 13 in 2023.

Throughout the concert, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra is to showcase various pieces by Sebelius which has not been performed often in South Korea. Also the performance will end with the composer Sibelius’ final symphony, Symphony No 7.

On March of 2023, conductor Osmo Vanska will be leading the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra for two weeks.

One of the most well known violinist from Deutsche Grammophon Lisa Batiashvili will be collaborating with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra led by Osmo Vanska on March 24 and 25 with Sibelius’s violin symphony.

Continuing on in March 30 and 31, the original version of Sibelius violin symphony which originates back to 1904 will be performed by violinist Elina Vahala and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. Opportunity to play the violin symphony by Sibelius is granted to violinist and conducts by the house of Sibelius starting in 1990. Osmo Vanska is the first conductor to have ever been awarded with rights to perform the piece in 1990, and violinist Elina Vahala was granted with her right to perform the piece in 2015.

Last concert planned for March of 2023, director Osmo Vanska will perform Sibelius’ Symphony No 6 and No 2 and finish his cycle of Sibelius.
