SEOUL, April 22 (Yonhap) -- SG Wannabe, one of the most popular vocal group in the 2000s, became the center of attention after appearing on MBC's reality program, "Hangout with Yoo."
Many of SG Wannabe's hit songs, including, "Timeless," which was released 17 years ago, have entered the top of the music charts within the nation simultaneously.
In the top 100 of Melon's 24 Hits, one of the largest music sites in S.Korea, "Timeless" ranked sixth as of 10 a.m. on Thursday while six other songs by the vocal group including, "La La La," "Partner for life," "As I live," "Crime and Punishment," and "Arirang," also went on the charts.
According to Melon, the number of people streaming SG Wannabe songs increased to 2,167% for "Partner for life," 2,098% for "Timeless," and 1,612% for "As I live" after SG Wannabe appeared on "Hangout with Yoo."
"Timeless" was ranked No.1 on the Melon weekly chart in late February 2004, making it the first time in 17 years for the song to reach No.1 if it continues to climb up the music chart.
In addition, the songs are gaining more interest due to the fact that they have all been released more than 10 years ago since "As I live" and "Crime and Punishment" was released in 2005, "Partner for life" in 2006, "Arirang" in 2007, and "La La La" in 2008.
SG Wannabe members Kim Yong-jun, Kim Jin-ho, and Lee Seok-hoon all appeared as a group on "Hangout with Yoo" on April 17th, while singing their hit songs and telling stories about their prime days.
SG Wannabe was the main singing group in popularizing medium tempo ballads with strong rhythm and fast speed in the 2000s. The group won Golden Disc Awards three times and enjoyed their popularity with album sales exceeding 2.8 million copies, even though digital copies were more favored than albums at the time.
However, their sensibility delivered through their performance on "Hangout with Yoo" filled the people who enjoyed their music in the past with nostalgia.
People are also interested in whether SG Wannabe's ballad styles will make a comeback to the music industry after the band's hit songs have began to appear back on the music charts.
In the SG Wannabe special episodes on "Hangout with Yoo", comedian Yoo Jae-seok's alternate character, "Yoo Ya-ho" will be working on a project to create a new group named, 'MSG Wannabe'--a play on the name SG Wannabe.
"Hangout with Yoo" proved their influence in the music market last summer, when they formed a seasonal super group, SSAK3, with Yoo Jae-seok, singer Rain and Lee Hyo-ri. SSAK3 debuted with their 90s inspired single, "Beach Again," which gained popularity among the public.
Producer Cho Young-soo, who is considered a "master of medium tempo" in the 2000s by producing a number of SG Wannabe's hits such as "La La La," "Partner for life," "Love You," will present a song "I Will Bring Light to Your Step" with singer Kassy on the 27th.
Meanwhile the youngest member of SG Wannabe, Kim Jin-ho, recently established a one-man agency, Voice Entertainment, and became involved with writing lyrics, compositions, and music video production, while member Kim Yong-jun signed with agency Double H TNE earlier last month.
Lastly, Lee Seok-hoon has been working on participating in the late singer Kim Hyun-sik remake album and appearing in musicals.
