SEOUL, Oct. 8 (Yonhap) -- K-pop girl group aespa, which instantly rose to stardom with its addictive single "Next Level," has succeeded in topping music charts with its first EP "Savage."
"Savage," which is also the title of aespa's lead track, was released on Tuesday and topped Melon's Top 100 chart as of 10 a.m. on Friday.
The song also topped the chart from music platform Flo as well as the daily chart on Genie Music the previous day.
"Next Level," which was released in May, still remains within the top 10 on music charts and is now joined by "Savage." As a result, aespa has now placed both songs side by side on the top of the chart.
The music video for "Savage" secured over 50 million views on YouTube as of 1:30 a.m. on Friday," according to the girl group's agency SM Entertainment. The figure was achieved about 7 hours after the initial release of the music video on Oct. 2, shortening the span of time it took "Next Level" (3 days and 10 hours) to reach the same record.
The new mini-album also topped the iTunes Top Album chart in 18 regions around the world, including Japan, Australia, Brazil, New Zealand and Russia.
The song "Savage," like "Next Level," deeply incorporates aespa's unique "avatar" concept and depicts a story that unfolds in what is called "SM Culture Universe."
The meaning of the lyrics are difficult to understand if listeners are unfamiliar with the background behind aespa's unprecedented concept. The girl group members appear with its own virtual avatars, which exist in the "metaverse." However, as Black Mamba, an evil being, tries to interfere the connection between the four members and their avatars, the group go out in the wild to find Black Mamba.
