SEOUL, March 14 (Yonhap) -- "While maintaining the essence of 'Physical: 100,' we made efforts to improve the areas that were lacking and show a new aspect," said PD Jang Ho-gi.
Netflix held a production presentation for 'Physical: 100 Season 2 - Underground' on the 14th, explaining the features of Season 2, which will be released on the 19th of this month, and the differences from the previous season.
PD Jang Ho-gi emphasized, "There are many shocking quests that couldn't be included in the preview because they could be spoilers," and added, "In the latter part of the season, there are tremendous and challenging quests."
PD Lee Jong-il also said, "The quests are massive and brutal."
“Physical: 100” is a survival entertainment program to find the person with the best physique among 100 participants. Season 1 achieved success by ranking first in the non-English TV series category on Netflix, making it the first Korean entertainment program to do so.
If Season 1 set resembled a Greek temple, Season 2, with the subtitle 'Underground,' will feature contestants competing in a set designed like an underground mine, fitting the theme.
Writer Kang Suk-kyung said, "I created quests by imagining how to select the strongest person if there were 100 people with the best physical abilities on Earth in a state where the surface has become a ruin," and emphasized, "It is structured with perfect immersion in reality."
Season 2 will feature contestants from various professions such as diplomats, police officers, soldiers, actors, and idol singers. The first Korean UFC participant Kim Dong-hyun, judo athlete Lee Won-hee, and wrestling gold medalist Jung Ji-hyun will also appear.
As there were as many as 100 contestants, in Season 1, controversy arose as some contestants were revealed to have been involved in school violence or crimes later on.
PD Jang addressed this by saying, "We went through the tightest verification possible within the framework of Korean entertainment and the law."
The production team also addressed the controversy surrounding the manipulation of the final match in Season 1.
PD Jang stated, "There has never been any manipulation to make a specific contestant the winner or to reverse the results of a match," but added, "I feel that such suspicions arose because we were not perfectly prepared."
He continued, "This time, in order for viewers to fully understand in case of unexpected situations or variables, we decided to show them as they are," explaining, "Since it is important that unexpected situations do not occur, we conducted numerous simulations and invited around 10 certified MMA referees to objectively judge the outcomes."
“Physical: 100” Season 2 will be released on the 19th of this month.
