SEOUL, August 2 (Yonhap) --The National Museum of Korean Contemporary History announced on Tuesday that it would reorganize and introduce a new exhibition corner related to the Korean War, which has been controversial for historical distortions and errors.

There was criticism that the Korean War-related exhibits in the permanent exhibition room history hall did not adequately explain the historical facts, with some contents being bias, distorted and wrong.

For example, among the exhibits, there was a front page of the "Haebang Ilbo" (July 10, 1950) when the North Korean army occupied Seoul in 1950, but was criticized as it stated that the reason behind the war was because South Korea attacked North Korea first.

In response, the museum temporarily closed this corner in June, inspected the exhibits with about 10 advisors, and discussed the direction of the reorganization.

"There were many criticisms saying that the explanations were not sufficient enough as the descriptions of the background, the cause of the war and how the war began were all abbreviated. So we'll go through the exhibits and see what we could change," said an official from the museum.

According to this reorganization, the exhibition corners related to the Korean War have increased from 4 areas to 5 areas.

In order to clearly show the flow of the war and historical facts, explanatory materials were added, and for the dispatch of the UN forces, historical data including photographs were also reinforced.

The museum will continue to review the contents of the exhibits pointed out as problematic and plans to reorganize them one by one.

"The goal of the museum is to show a balanced exhibition of our modern and contemporary history based on historical facts," Nam Hee-sook, director of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History said. "Through this reorganization, we plan to present exhibition contents that faithfully exhibit the historical information."
