SEOUL September 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actress Lee Yoo-mi gave her speech after receiving the Emmys saying that she is more than happy to be the first asian actress to be awarded with Emmys.

Throughout the 74thh Emmys award, held on September 4 (US time) South Korean actress Lee Yoo-mi raised her hands up high and shouted “I’m so very happy!” after winning the title of “Outstanding Guest Actress.”

“I still cannot believe I have won the Emmys.” adding “I can’t wait to tell my friends and family about the news.” announced actress Lee Yoo-mi in Korean, during the backstage interview conducted right after the award ceremony.

When asked about where she will place the trophy, actress stated “I am going to place it at a place where it can be seen from everywhere.” stated Lee Yoo-mi.

“Outstanding Guest Actress” award Lee Yoo-mi received drew a lot of attention because it was one the first award to be announced out of all the “Squid Game” related nomination.

“Squid Game” which has been writing the history since the initial release of the series added another record to their name value. Reason being, Emmys was never awarded to non English drama series in the past. Especially actress Lee Yoo-mi was the first Asian actress to ever have been awarded with the “Outstanding Guest Actress” which adds more value to the award.

Although there has been couple of times where Asian actors received Emmys award but they were American or British actors. Korean Canadian actress Sandra Oh has been nominated for the “Outstanding Guest Actress” and more since 2005 but never been awarded.

“Outstanding Guest Actress” award Lee Yoo-mi received is for actors and actresses with running time of over 5 percent and less than 50 percent. Although it might not be as highly recognized as awards for supporting actors and actresses, the “Outstanding Guest Actress” is awarded to people who have shown significant role in each episode.

Other Korean actresses within the film industry have sent their congratulations to Lee Yoo-mi and her award.

Through the official Instagram account of Netflix they have sent out a message congratulating Lee Yoo-mi and her achievement by stating “Congratulations to our 240th contestant Lee Yoo-mi” adding “she has wrote a history at Emmys.” Number 240 is the number Lee Yoo-mi’s character Ji-yeong’s participant number.

Actress Cho Yi-hyun who worked with Lee Yoo-mi through Netflix’s “All of Us Are Dead” posted a celebratory post on her official Instagram stating ”I am so proud of you and I look up to you for all your work.” With heart emoticons.

Moreover, Actress Kang Min-ah who worked with Lee Yoo-mi throughout the movie “Park Hwa-young” which was released in 22018 left a note congratulating Lee Yoo-mi’s achievement as well.
