SEOUL, Oct. 23 (Yonhap) -- A reenactment of the Joseon Dynasty’s royal guard inspection ceremony will take place at Gyeongbokgung Palace at the end of this month, the Korea Heritage Service and Korea Heritage Agency announced Thursday.
The event, titled “Cheopjong,” will run from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 at the Heungnyemun Square inside Gyeongbokgung. The term “cheopjong” refers to the act of striking a bell repeatedly. Historically, the king ordered the ritual to ensure the kingdom’s defense readiness and to personally review his royal guards.
When the bell was struck, all government officials and soldiers of the royal guards (known as the Five Guards) assembled at the palace for inspection.
Historical records, including the “Annals of King Yejong” from June 2, 1469, document the king remarking, “This is the first time I have ordered a Cheopjong since ascending the throne, but there are too few soldiers and officials.”
The reenactment will be based on historical texts such as the “Gyeongguk Daejeon” (Grand Code for State Administration) and will feature a dramatized procession, martial arts demonstrations, and military formations. Costumes and weapons from early Joseon will also be showcased.
A public rehearsal will take place at 11 a.m. on Oct. 30. Visitors can also try on military uniforms known as “cheollik” and experience traditional martial arts such as spear and staff techniques during two daily sessions held near the Hyopseongmun Gate.
