SEOUL, Dec. 30 (Yonhap) -- Singer IU tops the charts with her mini-album “Pieces,” released on Wednesday.
The title song of the album “Winter Sleep,” ranked No. 1 on the music charts. “Drama” ranked 6th, “Next Stop” was at 8th, “You” was at 11th, and “Love Letter” was at 12th, according to music streaming site Melon, on Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. (KST). All five tracks swept the top music charts in Korea.
The singer made a series of hits this year, from “Celebrity,” “LILAC,” “strawberry moon,” to the newly released “Winter Sleep.”
The album “Pieces,” just like its title, is the completed version of pieces IU thought about throughout her 20s and was written and composed by the singer herself, according to EDAM Entertainment.
With a calming melody, the tracks touch the listeners as it holds the singer’s philosophy.
The title song “WInter Sleep,” is about the cycle of life and death, which may seem like a heavy topic for someone in their 20s. The singer tells the story of her first year after losing a loved family, friend, and companion animal.
“I started sketching the song at 27 when I had a lot of thoughts about death and what was left in such world, and finished the song at 29 after I said several goodbyes,” said IU.
"This song had the longest recording time," the singer added. “I usually try to express myself concisely during recording, but I didn’t control my emotions in this song.”
"Despite the great loss in my world, flowers bloom, stars shine, poems are created without any delay," IU explained. "There is a 'Winter Sleep' in between those repeated seasons."
The album consists of a total of five songs, including "Drama," created by IU to comfort a friend who went through a heartbreak, “Next Stop,” which was made after joining the character in the drama "My Mister," and "You," which was composed because she missed her friend.
