SEOUL, Apr. 5 (Yonhap) -- An array of budding South Korean actors/actresses, including Ryeoun, Choi Hyun-wook, Seol In-ah, and Shin Eun-soo, have confirmed to star in tvN’s upcoming television series “Sparkling Watermelon” (literal translation), which is expected to premiere in the second half of this year.
This forthcoming fantasy coming-of-age television series will follow the story of a prodigy who was born with a natural talent for music crash-landing into an unknown space of a suspicious musical instrument store. He encounters suspicious youths at the store, and they form a band named “Watermelon Sugar.”
In the series, Ryeoun will suit up as CODA Eun-gyeol who was born to deaf parents. Although he is a perfect model student during the day, he lives a double life as a guitarist of a band at night. In the meantime, Choi Hyun-wook, who plucked to stardom by starring in multiple hit series including “Twenty-five Twenty-one” and “Weak Hero: Class 1,” has been slated to play the role of Lee Chan, a high school student who seems to be from Generation X, rather than Gen MZ, by growing up with older college students at his grandmother’s inn.
Meanwhile, Seol In-ah will star as Se-kyung, also dubbed the cello goddess of Seowon Art High School, and Shin Eun-soo is set to play the role of Cheong-ah, a cold-hearted and arrogant congenital deaf student.
The series will be based on the script written by screenwriter Jin Soo-wan, who has credits for writing the hit television series “The Moon Embracing the Sun,” “Kill Me, Heal Me,” and “Chicago Typewriter.” Director Son Jung-hyun, who is known to have previously delivered the romance series “When My Love Blooms,” will take the helm.
The exact premiere schedule is yet to be determined.
