SEOUL, Sept. 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korean flutist Han Yeo-jin (20) was appointed as the head of the flute of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in Germany.

According to the performance industry on the 17th, Han successfully passed all three auditions and was selected as the head flutist on Sept. 14 (local time). Han will join the orchestra next month for the 2021-2022 season, and will later be decided whether she will become a life-long member after a one year training period.

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, founded in 1743, is famous for being the world's oldest civilian orchestra. Mendelssohn served as the orchestra's music director, and entering the 20th century, famous musicians such as Wilhelm Furtwängler, Bruno Walter, Kurt Masur, and Riccardo Chailly took over the position. Later on, conductor Andris Nelsons was appointed as the director for the 2017-2018 season.

After attending the Korea National University of Arts, Han studied Andrea Lieberknecht at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich in Germany. The 20-year-old flutist recently graduated from this university and is planning to go to the same graduate school for her master's degree. Han was selected by Villa Musica, a German foundation which supports young performers of classical music, and is currently performing in Europe and the U.S.

In 2014, Han became the youngest flutist to participate in the Carl Nielsen International Music Flute Competition as well as won first place at the first Rising Stars Grand Prix International Music Competition Berlin in 2016, and third place at the ninth Kobe International Flute Competition in 2017.
