SEOUL, December 27 (Yonhap) -- It is found that six out of then online streaming platform viewers in Korea watch contents five days a week. Also, it was figured that the most used online streaming is YouTube.
Korean Communications Commission announced the "2022 Broadcasting Media Usage Behavior Survey" results with these information on Tuesday.
The survey is a basic statistic and state-approved statistic on the users viewing behavior and change in perspective, and this year, 6,708 men and women aged 13 or older living in 4,287 households nationwide were interviewed from June to August.
The use of online streaming platform has increased to 72%, showing increase compared to last year (69.5%), according to the investigation.
Among online streaming platform viewers, 95.7% of the respondents said that they watch it more than once a week, and 60.7% of the respondents said that they watch it more than five days a week. It was found out that the average daily hours of use was 1 hour and 29 minutes.
The most preferred online streaming platform was YouTube (66.1%), followed by Netflix (31.5%), Tving (7.8%), and Wavve (6.1%).
Entertainment / Dating program (67.2%) was the most watched program category followed by drama (49.6%), News (31.4%), Sports (22.9%), and Current topics/ culture (21.8%).
Smartphones (89.1%) were overwhelmingly used to watch online streaming platform contents , but the percentage decreased compared to the previous year (92.2%). On the other hand, watching online streaming platform contents through TV receivers was 16.2%, showing increase from the previous year (12.4%).
In addition, 93.4% own smartphones, showing similar rate to the previous three years.
By age, 93.8% of people in their 60s owned phones, showing increase, implying that the use of smart devices is expanding to the elderly.
8.9 % of people own smartwatches, showing steady increase every year from 2.2% in 2020.
Smartphones had the highest percentage of recognition as an essential media for daily life at 70%, followed by TVs at 27.5%. Desktops, laptops, newspapers, and radios were less than 2%.
The smartphone usage rate for more than 5 days a week was 90.1%, and the TV usage rate was 75.5%. The result showed that the the higher the age, it showed the higher frequency of TV use, and the rate of smartphone use over the age of 70 was 50.7%, which was half the rate of use of other age groups.
The TV ownership rate of single-person households was 90.4%, lower than that of all households (95.4%), and the subscription rate of paid broadcasting channel was 85.3%, lower than that of all households (92.7%).
