SEOUL, Sept. 16 (Yonhap) -- “Tristes Tropiques,” the latest film by director Park Hoon-jung, has won the top prize in the international competition section at France's Etrange Festival.

 

The film's international distributor, Finecut, said Wednesday that “Tristes Tropiques” won the Nouveau Genre Grand Prize, the top award in the international competition section, at the 32nd Etrange Festival.

 

“Tristes Tropiques” is an action noir about children belonging to an assassin organization raised by Sabu, the undisputed ruler of a tropical rainforest. After an incident, they begin to suspect one another and vow revenge.

 

Marc Trunnen, a programmer at the Etrange Festival, described the film as “an action thriller that builds in intensity like an opera, hurtling relentlessly toward an enraged climax as if there were no tomorrow.”

 

The Etrange Festival is a genre film festival held every September in Paris. Previous South Korean films invited to the festival include “Exhuma,” “Concrete Utopia” and “The Spy Gone North.”

 

“Tristes Tropiques” was also previously invited to the 58th Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival and won the Silver Raven in the international competition section at the 44th Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.

 

Park has directed films including “New World” (2013), “The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion” (2018) and “Night in Paradise” (2021).

 

“Tristes Tropiques” is currently in post-production, and its South Korean release date has not yet been set.
