'Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival' reopens after sudden closure due to winter rain

SEOUL January 14 (Yonhap) -- Festivals being held in Gangwon province which was put to a pause due to unexpected rain on Friday, will be reopen its venues to visitors throughout the weekend.

According to the notice released by Hwacheon district, “Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival” which was closed off due to the unexpected winter rain on Friday will be reopening their main venue “Ice Fishing” on Saturday.

Due to the pouring rain which continued on from dusk until late in the evening Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival was closed off on Friday. However Hwacheon district decided to reopen the venue after checking the thickness and the quality of ice.

Therefore, reservation sites for ice fishing, and public fishing site was reopened to its visitors starting at 8 a.m. in the morning.

However, various side venues such ice sleigh, snow sleigh, bobsleigh, figure skating rinks, and more will operate according to the situation as the day progresses.

Unexpected winter rain throughout South Korea has led “Hongcehon River Winter Festival” to not only postpone its opening hours to 1 p.m. on Saturday but also to kick off the festival without opening the outdoors fishing venue.

On the day of its opening due to continued rain “Hongcheon River Winter Festival,” experienced overflow on the fishing area therefore indoor events except for the opening ceremony was held.

However the authorities addressed that since the ice is frozen 30cms deep therefore it won’t be a problem hosting the venues once the rain stops.

Moreover, “2022 Pyeongchang Trout Festival” which hasn’t kicked off will decided upon whether to kick off the festival or not depending on the change on the weather.

Official of the “Hongcheon River Winter Festival” stated “We were very worried due to unexpected winter rain which has caused us to either postpone our events or to close off couple of the venues, however, the weather seems to be clearing up again, therefore we have decided to reopen the venues” adding “However, the weather conditions can easily change, therefore if the weather conditions becomes bad or it threatens the safety of the visitors we will make sure to close the event immediately.”
