SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) -- Kang Hyeong-cheol’s Korean superhero film "Hi-FIVE," currently enjoying strong ticket sales, is set to face off against the Hollywood fantasy movie "How to Train Your Dragon" over the Memorial Day holiday.
According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing network on Thursday, "Hi-FIVE" drew over 44,000 viewers the previous day, securing the top spot at the box office with a revenue share of 33.0 percent.
Since its release on May 30, the film has overtaken Tom Cruise’s "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning" ("Mission: Impossible 8") to claim the top box office position and has continued to draw audiences.
On Wednesday (June 3), a national holiday for the 21st presidential election, the film recorded its highest daily audience count with approximately 173,000 viewers (32.2 percent).
However, with Dean DeBlois' "How to Train Your Dragon" opening on the 6th, the box office rankings may shift.
As of 9 a.m. that day, "How to Train Your Dragon" held a reservation rate of 31.2 percent and over 102,000 advance ticket holders, far outpacing "Hi-FIVE," which had a 16.9 percent reservation rate and about 55,000 pre-booked viewers.
"How to Train Your Dragon" is a live-action adaptation of DreamWorks’ flagship animated franchise. It tells the story of Hiccup (played by Mason Thames), a boy unrecognized by his Viking peers due to his un-Viking-like appearance and personality, and his journey to change the world alongside the legendary dragon Toothless.
