SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Yonhap) -- "It's an honor to make my debut with 'The Penthouse: War in Life.' I thank everyone who has allowed me to participate in this work."
Actress Choi Ye-bin (23), who plays the role of Ha Eun-byeol, the daughter of Cheon Seo-jin (Kim So-yeon) in the SBS TV drama "The Penthouse" series, recently met with Yonhap News Agency for an interview.
Taking her first step to the small screen through "The Penthouse: War in Life," Choi accurately portrays the struggle Ha Eun-byeol goes through to meet the high expectations of her mother Cheon Seo-jin.
"I think every reason for Eun-byeol's life was her mother. Since Cheon Seo-jin is a great and respectable person, I believe things that seemed coercive could be seen as love for others."
In the beginning of the drama, there were mixed evaluations of Choi's acting. However, Ha Eun-byeol was able to established herself as a "popular character" by garnering a large number of fans and showing her acting skills that have improved over the season.
"I would be lying if I said I wasn't upset (about the public's response to my acting), but I tried to focus on how to work harder because I had a lot to show in the future episodes," Choi said laughing.
As for Eun-byeol's iconic move of tucking her hair behind her ears, Choi said, "The gesture to move my hair behind my ears were written in the script. The director suggested to make this a signature move for Eun-byeol."
In particular, regarding actress Kim So-yeon and actor Yoon Jong-hoon, who act as Ha Eun-byeol's parents, Choi said, "I was so lucky to act as a family with such top actors. Both of them were very considerate and encouraged me to act out scenes in my own way."
Looking back on her two-year journey with "The Penthouse" series, Choi said, "I really didn't have any similarities with Eun-byeol, so I tried to get close to my character at first, but later on I was able to understand her without much effort."
During the filming process, Choi picked "loneliness" as her point of difficulty.
"In season one, I felt distant even though we were filming in a school setting and I was with my fellow co-stars. Especially when we shoot in Eun-byeol's room or at the set of 'my house' within the Hera Palace, I felt lonely. I even jokingly asked the other actors and actresses who act as Eun-byeol's classmates to play with me." Choi said laughing.
"Eun-byeol has a wide range of emotions, and as an actress, trying to express those various emotions have become a learning experience for me as well," Choi said. "In the future, I want to meet characters with bright and positive personalities that are similar to my original personality. I would also like to take the challenge of starring in noir movies like 'Chinatown.'"
