SEOUL, Apr. 12 (Yonhap) – The complicated relationship where one can neither completely love nor hate. Although those who have not experienced it may not agree, it is usually said that the relation between mother and daughter is that of love and hatred.
The mother pours out love upon her daughter and would hate her for taking away her youth and even expects her daughter to fulfill her dream that was not satisfied. The daughter pities her mother but also feels burdens and hatred as the mother constantly integrates with her.
The movie “Anchor” depicts the story of the mother, who gave up her dream because of her daughter, and the daughter, who achieved her dream thanks to the sacrifice of her mother. The emotion of love and hatred embedded in their relationship was well displayed in the thriller and the film portrays how the trauma leads to the tragedy.
It is the first feature film of director Jung Ji-yeon, who has produced movies “Flu,” “The Boy,” and “I will be brave(translated).”
The star news anchor Se-ra(played by Chun Woo-hee) is a career woman that seems to have everything. She secured the position of the main news, "9 o'clock news," at a young age and lives in a large apartment with the scenery of Han River. Besides, her husband is a successful fund manager.
However, she is filled with inferiority and anxiety inside her. The biggest complex is that she was a former announcer, not a reporter. The anxiety grows as colleagues talk behind her back for not having covered the news, and as a younger reporter tries to take her position.
The person who most diligently disturbs Sera is none other than her mother So-jung (Lee Hye-young). So-jung keeps giving burdens as to how long she will be just reading what other people wrote like a parrot, and she intimidates her by highlighting the fact that a younger colleague will take her position. When Se-ra receives a call signaling a murder, the mother encourages Se-ra to break a scoop, saying, "This is a chance to be a real new anchor.”
Se-ra eventually visits the informant's house instead of calling the police. There, she finds a girl who is drowning in a bathtub and a body of a woman in her twenties who hangs herself in a closet. The police concluded that Mi-so, who was attending college, killed her daughter and herself.
However, Se-ra is suspicious of In-ho(Shin Ha-kyun), a psychiatrist who was a family doctor of the victim. She believes that he led Mi-so to death by taking charge of her hypnotherapy. As he continues to hover around her and approaches her family, Se-ra’s doubts become even more certain.
Since then, Se-ra is suffering from a strange phenomenon that may be an illusion or a nightmare. She sees moments of Mi-so hanging herself in the closet, and she almost had to give up her position as a news anchor after she chocked her neck during the news.
The pressures from her mother So-jung become even more intense. She not only scolds her daughter for her mistakes but she also urges her to get divorced with her husband, telling her that all bad events occurred because of him. Furthermore, So-jung adds that Se-ra should not have a baby.
Although it is the relationship that has been commonly depicted on the screen so far, “Anchor” transformed into a new genre by adding stories of mystery and thriller.
