SEOUL March 4 (Yonhap) -- After receiving the report of some of the street cats dwelling in the Marado Islad located within Jeju are threatening the endangered natural monument Japanese Murrelet, some of the street cats were sent off shores in order to protect the endangered Species on Saturday.
Jeju Island’s World Heritage Headquarter and more has relocated 42 of the street cats captured within Marado Island to Moseulpo Port.
Continuing on Jeju Island’s World Heritage Headquarter has relocated themselves to Jocheon town located within Jeju in order to run a diagnosis on street cats captured from the island. Street cats without any health issues were kept at the nearby protection facility, and those with health issues were sent to Jeju University in order for treatment.
Majority of the street can are known to be healthy.
World Heritage Headquarter started their planning process to capture the street cats on February 27 and 28, and executed their plans on March 1 and 2. Continuing with their process to capture street cats, the World Heritage Headquarter plans to capture additional street cats dwelling within Marado island.
Professor Oh Hong-sik, of Jeju University, population of street cats dwelling within the Marado Island, are estimated to be around 60 to 70.
The relocation of the street cats were project was executed based on the report that street cats within Marado Island are hunting Japanese Murrelet.
Marado Island which is designated as a natural reserve withholds habitat of Japanese Murrelet along with shearwater and various other birds.
However, people have reported seeing dead bodies of Japanese Murrelets and four of the dead bodies of Japanese Murrelets were found on February 24.
Some of the animal groups have addressed their concern on pin pointing the death of Japanese Murrelets on the street cats living within the Marado Island.
Hwang Mi-soon of National Union for the Protection of Cats addressed “Within the Marado Island there are in total of 7 dogs, and those 7 dogs constantly chase after street cats, and the four of the dead Japanese Murrelets were found at a place where street cats can proceed with their territorial activities due to 7 of the dogs living within the island.” adding “Hence one cannot accuse of the street cats for the death of Japanese Murrelets.”
