SEOUL, Mar. 6 (Yonhap) -- The Korea National University of Arts (K-Arts)’ KNUA Symphony Orchestra, which consists of students from the Instrumental Music Department of the School of Music, will be performing at the upcoming Beethoven Easter Festival in Poland.
The KNUA Symphony Orchestra is scheduled to have a total of three performances at the 27th Beethoven Easter Festival, which will hold its opening ceremony on Mar. 26 and wrap up on the 29th.
The KNUA Symphony formerly participated in the 26th Festival, which was held online last April, and performed live to Polish audiences. For this year, the Orchestra has been invited as an official performance group.
The Beethoven Easter Festival touts itself as one of the largest classical music festivals in Europe, held every year before Easter. It is also recognized as one of the most significant cultural events in Poland, where meticulously selected programs are interpreted by internationally renowned artists.
For this year’s festival, Jung Chi-young, an honorary professor at the K-Arts, will conduct along with pianist Moon Ji-young, a graduate of the K-Arts who made herself known by winning the Geneva International Competition in 2014 and the Busoni Piano Competition in 2015.
The Symphony will kick off with Beethoven’s Egmont, Op. 84 and proceed with Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2, which they will be performing with Moon. The piano concerto will then be followed by Lee Young-jo’s “Dawn” and Polish contemporary music master Krzysztof Penderecki’s Symphony No.5 “Korean.”
Penderecki was appointed by the late former Minister of Culture Lee O-young to compose this masterpiece “Korean,” which he had composed for the Korean traditional music instrument Pyeonjong to blend in and harmonize.
Prior to their performance in Poland, the KNUA Symphony is scheduled to hold a regular concert at Seoul’s Lotte Concert Hall on Mar. 15, where they will perform the same repertoire to the Korean audiences beforehand.
